LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant women's soccer could not solve a formidable Rhodes defense on Wednesday, falling 2-0 at Scotland Yard.
AT Simon played all 90 minutes defensively, while
Bronwyn Kickasola secured eight saves.
Tess Duble,
Clara Norris,
Abbey Heupel, and
Autumn Biancamano fired shots for the Scots (3-4-2).
The first 24 minutes went by very quickly, with both teams playing conservative, patient soccer. At the 24:04 mark, Kickasola got to work, saving a shot from Hadley Carrington to force a corner kick. However, Kat Stanley converted that corner kick into a goal to make it 1-0 Lynx (9-2-1).
Norris and Biancamano put up a pair of shots before the end of the half, but neither found the net as Covenant went into the half down by a goal.
In the second half, the Scots defense allowed just a pair of shots in the first 12 minutes, both of which went wide. However, another corner kick chance proved successful for Rhodes, as Stanley found Sydney Gallagher for a header in the 58th minute to make it 2-0.
Kickasola did her best work from that point on, as she made seven saves the rest of the way to try and keep Covenant in it, but the Lynx defense was impenetrable throughout the remainder of the match, as they held onto the 2-0 lead.
Gabi Garza and Lauren Hollis combined to post the shutout for Rhodes in goal, while Stanley led all non-goalkeepers in minutes with 88.
