LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant volleyball outlasted a scrappy Piedmont squad on Saturday afternoon, winning in a sweep, 3-0, at Barnes PE Center.
Aubrianna Gerdes posted 11 kills to lead the way once again, while
Cali Sandhoff had 19 assists and
Sarah Jennings, Sandhoff, and
Carmen Harvey combined for nine aces. Defensively, Scarlatt Martz contributed five blocks and
Henley Gentry had 17 digs, with Gerdes adding 13.
The Scots (17-2, 8-0 CCS) opened the first set with a 10-3 run on the back of Jennings' three aces, and then posted another 10-3 stretch later to extend their lead to 22-10.
Gabby Sumrall then ended the set with a pair of kills to go up 1-0 after a 25-13 score.
A 6-1 Covenant stretch opened the second set, as Gerdes got going with a pair of kills, and then a 9-2 run midway through made it 19-8 in a blink, as the Scots forced five attack errors in that span. The Lions (9-8,1-5 CCS) attempted to get back in it late, but a service error gave set two to Covenant, 25-17.
In the third set, it was Piedmont's turn to turn up the heat, as they took a 6-2 lead out of the gate, and then followed with a 6-1 run at the middle point to lead 17-12, and held for a 20-16 lead, looking to force a fourth set.
However, the Scots came marching back.
A Gerdes kill, a Sandhoff ace, and two kills from Sumrall tied it at 20, and then another ace from Sandhoff and a Lions attack error gave Covenant the lead, 22-20, a 6-0 run. Piedmont scored twice to tie it at 22, but Gerdes,
Avery Maiden, and
Kennedy Barber closed out the match with three kills to take the set and match, 25-23.
Lillian Gaskins led the Lions with eight kills, while Hannah Haskins added eight assists and Rylee Vessell added 17 digs.
