LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Covenant men's basketball got a 10-point, 9-rebound, 10-block performance from
Pierce Smith, but it was not enough, as they fell to Belhaven, 87-78, at Barnes PE Center on Friday evening.
Smith's 10 blocks set an NCAA-era program record, as he constantly frustrated the Blazers' attempts.
Logan Patterson added a team-best 17 points, while
Korbin Long had 11 and seven rebounds.
Belhaven (9-7, 3-0 CCS) was in command for the majority of the first half, getting up by as many as 17 with 7:26 to go in the half. However, the Scots put together a response, scoring eight unanswered in 59 seconds. Patterson had four points and two steals in that stretch, as Covenant's fast-paced style kicked in to high gear.
By the end of the half, the Scots continued to chip away, and Patterson's buzzer-beating layup made it a seven-point deficit at half.
Covenant used another short burst early in the second half, capped off by an
Ethan Parker three, to cut the lead down to three.
Jake Stephens added a layup with 15:50 to go, making it a one-point game.
However, a subsequent 11-0 Blazer run put the Scots back in a hole, one that they nearly climbed out of, as Patterson hit another bucket with 9:02 to go to cut it back to four.
Belhaven again responded, though, forcing Covenant to have to gather some more momentum. The Scots came close, fouling early and taking some opportunities off of missed free throws to get it down to six, but that would be as close as it would get.
Dan Robinson scored 18 for the Blazers to lead all scorers, while Neal Terry (12 points, 13 rebounds), and Dyllion Redmond (eight points, 12 boards) assisted on the glass.
