Covenant Sweeps Wesleyan on Senior Day

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - It was Senior Day at the Covenant College Softball field as the Scots honored five seniors in their final home games against Wesleyan. Covenant sent the seniors out with a bang as they swept Wesleyan to earn a pair of conference victories.

Game 1 Final: Covenant 3, Wesleyan 2
Records: Covenant (10-23, 1-10 CCS), Wesleyan (1-24, 0-11 CCS)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Ashlyn Gaines put the Scots ahead in the first inning with an RBI double to center field that brought in Gracie Lacle.
  • Kathleen Carpenter scored in the second inning to make it 2-0 after an infield error.
  • Later in the frame, Madison Taylor stole home to extend Covenant's lead.
  • Sydney McLelveen hit a solo home run in the third to put Wesleyan on the board.
  • In the fourth inning, Wesleyan drew within one run after an RBI single through the left side.
  • Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings.
  • Wesleyan had the tying runner on third base in the seventh inning, however a strikeout and a popout ended the game. 

GAME NOTES:

  • Charley Clark (7 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 5 K) pitched a complete game to earn the win in the circle. 
  • Covenant was outhit 9-6 with all six of its hits coming from six different players. 
  • Each team committed one error. 


Game 2 Final: Covenant 11, Wesleyan 5
Records: Covenant (11-23, 2-10 CCS), Wesleyan (1-25, 0-12 CCS)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Covenant had two errors in the first inning allowing Wesleyan to score two runs.
  • Gaines, for the second game in a row, had an RBI double in the first inning to cut the lead to one run. 
  • Later in the first inning, an RBI single by Olivia Stefl, which also included a throwing error from Wesleyan that brought in another run, put Covenant ahead 3-2. 
  • In the second inning, Isabella Duran hit an RBI double off the left-field wall to extend Covenant's lead to two runs.
  • Later in the frame, Duran scored off an outfield error to make it 5-2.
  • Myla Still drew a bases-loaded walk in the third inning for Covenant to score another run. 
  • The next batter struck out, however an errant throw trying to pick off the runner at third base went all the way to the fence, clearing the bases for three more runs to put the score at 9-2. 
  • The Scots and the Wolves were both held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings. 
  • Wesleyan started to mount a comeback in the sixth inning as a 3-RBI double to left field made it 9-5.
  • Covenant responded in the bottom of the frame, as Gaines blasted a two-run home run to center field, her second of the season.
  • Wesleyan was retired in order in the seventh inning to end the game. 

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant moves to 35-5 all-time against Wesleyan. 
  • Lauren Edgar (5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 1 K) earned the win in the circle while Madison Bowden (2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 K) pitched two innings in relief. 
  • Gaines (2-for-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, 1 HR) and Stefl (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) led Covenant offensively with two hits a piece. 
  • Wesleyan outhit Covenant 9-8.
  • The Wolves committed five errors while the Scots had three. 

UP NEXT: Covenant travels to Asbury on Tuesday for a doubleheader.
