Covenant Ends Eight-Game Road Trip With Loss at Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. - Covenant and Sewanee went head-to-head on Tuesday afternoon for the last of eight consecutive away games on the schedule for the Scots. A six-run fourth inning by the Tigers proved to be the deciding factor as they moved Covenant to under .500 for the first time all season.

Final: Covenant 1, Sewanee 10
Records: Covenant (12-13), Sewanee (16-11)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the second inning, Covenant attempted to score Cody Brewer from second base on a single to center field, however a perfectly executed outfield relay by the Tigers got him out at home plate.
  • Sewanee took the lead in the bottom of the frame as Blake Pou hit a solo home run to right field.
  • In the third inning, Covenant responded as Roby McClarnon blasted a solo shot to left field, his second of the year, to tie the game.
  • Sewanee took back the lead in the third inning, scoring a run on a wild pitch.
  • Pou led off the fourth inning for Sewanee with another home run, this one to center field to put the Tigers ahead 3-1.
  • Six hits later in the inning allowed the Tigers to score five more runs and blow the game open.
  • Covenant had a runner on third base with one out in the sixth inning, however a strikeout followed by a groundout allowed Sewanee to get out of the jam unscathed.
  • A pair of RBI singles by the Tigers in the bottom of the frame allowed them to move ahead 10-1.
  • Luke Carter had a double in the ninth inning, but he was just one of Covenant's two batters that reached base the final three innings.

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant moves to 19-9 all-time against Sewanee.
  • The Scots threw four pitchers led by starting RHP Christian Vander Veen (2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 K) and RHP Brady Daniell (3 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K) who pitched the final three innings in relief.
  • Carter (2-for-3, 1 BB) and McClarnon (2-for-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI) led the Covenant offense.
  • Sewanee outhit Covenant 14-6.
