LAGRANGE, Ga. - On Saturday, Covenant played a doubleheader with LaGrange after taking game one of the series on Friday. In what turned out to be a pair of wild baseball games, the Scots were on the losing end of both.Â
Game 1 Final: Covenant 9, LaGrange 18
Records: Covenant (11-8, 2-3 CCS), LaGrange (12-9, 4-1 CCS)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- RBI singles from Zeke Gilbert in the first inning and Roby McClarnon in the second inning put the Scots ahead 2-0.Â
- RHP Scotty Smith held the Panthers scoreless through the first three innings.
- Covenant went up 3-0 in the fourth inning as Ben Johnson brought in Joseph Tolbert with an RBI groundout.Â
- LaGrange answered in the bottom of the frame with a three-run home run down the left-filed line by Curt Bonner to tie the game.Â
- The Panthers used the long ball again in the fifth inning as David Smigelski blasted a two-run home run to left field.Â
- In the sixth inning, consecutive bases-loaded walks for Covenant tied the game at five.Â
- The next batter was Daniel Bell, who hit a 2-RBI double down the right-field line to put Covenant back in the lead at 7-5.
- The Scots added two more runs in the seventh inning with a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and an infield error.
- LaGrange tied the game at nine in the bottom of the frame with four runs highlighted by a three-run home run to right field by Jorge Fragoso.
- With the game still tied, the flood gates opened for the Panthers as they plated nine runs to take a 18-9 lead.Â
GAME NOTES:
- Smith (6.1 IP, 5 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) took a no decision on the bump for the Scots.Â
- McClarnon (3-for-6, 1 RBI, 1 R) and Benjamin Johnson (3-for-5, 1 RBI, 3 R) led the Covenant offense.Â
- Covenant outhit LaGrange 12-10.
- The Scots committed five errors while the Panthers had three.Â
Game 2 Final: Covenant 8, LaGrange 9
Records: Covenant (11-9, 2-4 CCS), LaGrange (13-9, 5-1 CCS)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- McClarnon led off the game with a triple, but scored on a throwing error for the "Little League Home Run".
- Later in the inning with the bases-loaded, Josh McCaskill cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double.Â
- An RBI sacrifice fly by Zach Ferlita two batters later put the Scots up 5-0 before the Panthers had a chance to bat.Â
- LaGrange squeezed by one run in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double to left-center field.Â
- The Scots made it 6-1 in the second inning, capitalizing on an error by the second baseman.Â
- A pair of RBI singles by LaGrange in the second inning put it within three runs at 6-3.
- Behind four hits, one walk, and a wild pitch, LaGrange scored four runs in the third inning to take the lead.Â
- In the fourth inning, Covenant tied the game at seven as Johnson brought home Gilbert with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field.Â
- The Panthers used the long ball in the fourth inning to take back the lead as Noah Preuer hit a two-run shot to right field.Â
- Pitching for both teams tightened up for the next two innings as neither team scored a run.Â
- Two errors from the Panthers in the seventh inning allowed Covenant to draw back within one run at 9-8.
- The Scots had one base runner on in the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to get the tying run across home plate.Â
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant moves to 20-28 all-time against LaGrange.
- Despite taking the loss, RHP Zach Barrett (6 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 2 BB) gave the Scots a chance with six innings of relief pitching.Â
- Bell (4-for-4, 2 R) with four hits and Gilbert (3-for-5, 2 R) with three hits had standout performances at the plate for Covenant.Â
- LaGrange outhit Covenant 15-12.
- The Panthers had seven errors while the Scots had one.Â
