NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Covenant continued play at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Break Classic on Wednesday with two more games. The Scots lost a heartbreaker in game one against PSU Harrisburg before dropping its second game of the day to Thiel.
Game 1 Final: Covenant 3, Penn State Harrisburg 5
Records: Covenant (9-12), Penn State Harrisburg (2-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Kathleen Carpenter gave the Scots the lead in the first inning with an RBI single to right field that scored Gracie Lacle.
- Harrisburg tied the game back up immediately, using an RBI double in the bottom of the frame to score a run.
- The two pitchers started to find their rhythm as neither team scored the next three innings.
- Covenant went back ahead in the fifth inning as Haley Russell brought home Isabella Duran with an RBI single to center field.
- Once again, the Nittany Lions answered right away, also using an RBI single to center field to score their second run.
- With the score still tied, Duran led off the seventh inning with a solo home run to left field, the first of her senior year.
- In the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff triple followed by an RBI single for Harrisburg tied the game.
- The next batter was Madisen Minney, who blasted a two-run walk-off home run to center field to win the game for the Nittany Lions.
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant moves to 0-1 all-time against PSU Harrisburg.
- Charley Clark (6 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 K) went the distance in the loss and struck out six batters.
- Duran (3-for-4, 2 R, 1 RB) led Covenant with a three-hit day including her home run.
- Covenant outhit Harrisburg 9-8.
Game 2 Final: Covenant 4, Thiel 13
Records: Covenant (9-13), Thiel (3-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- As it did in game one, Covenant scored a run in the first inning as Madison Taylor scored Duran with an RBI groundout.
- Thiel capitalized on two hits and a Covenant error to score three runs in the second inning to take the lead.
- The Tomcats used a 2-RBI single and another Covenant error to score three more runs in the third inning.
- An RBI double by Duran that scored Cailey Barnett in the third inning, started a rally for the Scots.
- Later in the frame, Duran came home from third base on a passed ball before Carpenter delivered an RBI double to center field to make it 6-4.
- Thiel came through again in the fourth inning with two more runs to answer Covenant's rally.
- In the fifth inning, the Tomcats broke the game open, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring five runs to put the score at 13-4.
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant moves to 0-1 all-time against Thiel.
- Madison Bowden (3.1 IP, 7 H, 11 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K), Lauren Edgar (1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 K), and Madison Taylor (0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER) all pitched for Covenant.
- The Scots were outhit 9-6, as Covenant had six different players with one hit.
UP NEXT: Covenant begins CCS play on Monday at home against LaGrange with a doubleheader scheduled.
