Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Covenant Unable To Give Belhaven First Conference Loss

JACKSON, Miss. - The Scots faced a tall task, facing the hottest team in the CCS, Belhaven, on its home court. As they did earlier this year in Barnes, the Blazers punished the Scots on the glass, however today's result was more lopsided than the four-point margin on Jan. 16.

Final: Covenant 80, Belhaven 103
Records: Covenant (7-12, 2-5 CCS), Belhaven (19-3, 9-0 CCS)

FIRST HALF:

  • Logan Patterson knocked down a triple on Covenant's opening possession, but the Scots then went scoreless for five minutes allowing the Blazers to move ahead 15-3.
  • With the help of 3-pointers from Luuk Dusek and Colt Donley, Covenant went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to four points.
  • The 3-ball kept Covenant in the game as triples from Dusek and Fisher Mitchell put the score at 21-17 with 10:45 remaining in the half.
  • The next three baskets for Belhaven were all dunks as it pushed its lead to 27-19.
  • Later in the half, a 9-0 run by the Blazers put them ahead 36-21.
  • The two teams went through a phase of trading baskets before an old-fashioned 3-point play from Kaleb Lofton put the score at 44-32.
  • Covenant would draw as close as 10 points twice in the remaining few minutes of the half, but a made free throw by Belhaven put it up 47-36 at the break.

SECOND HALF:

  • As he did in the first half, Patterson scored the first points with a made triple.
  • Five consecutive points by the Blazers, with three coming from the free-throw line put them in front 62-38.
  • Covenant responded as baskets from Lofton and Russell Hunter cut the lead to 66-55.
  • A quick 6-0 run by Belhaven pushed the lead back to 17 points at the midway point of the half.
  • Covenant wouldn't go away yet as a 9-2 run with points from five different players put the score at 74-64.
  • Right when it had the chance to apply more game pressure, the Scots went scoreless for two minutes allowing the Blazers to go back up by 14.
  • With 2:28 remaining, Belhaven knocked down a 3-pointer while being fouled for a 4-point play that put it on top 92-72.
  • Made free throws with 43 seconds left eclipsed the century mark for Belhaven before a layup put it at 103 for the game.
