Covenant Drops Home Contest to Sewanee

LOOKOUT Mt., Ga. - Covenant hosted Sewanee at Barnes in its final home game of the calendar year. Sewanee took control early and never relinquished the lead, pulling away for a decisive 90-65 victory.

Final: Covenant 65, Sewanee 90
Records: Covenant (1-5), Sewanee (5-3)

The Tigers opened the game with a fast start, jumping out to a 12-3 lead. The Scots fought to stay within striking distance, as baskets from Jada Sanders and Violet Wright cut the deficit to seven midway through the first quarter. Sewanee responded with another surge, closing the period on a 15-3 run to take a commanding 32-13 lead after one.

Sewanee maintained its dominance in the second quarter, scoring 11 of the first 13 points to extend the lead to 28. Covenant began to find a rhythm midway through the period, putting together an 11-2 run to trim the deficit to 19. The Tigers steadied themselves down the stretch and carried a 55-29 advantage into halftime.

The second half was far more evenly contested, with both teams trading baskets for much of the period. Sanders and Wright provided steady offense for Covenant, combining to score 19 of the Scots' 23 points in the third quarter. After three periods, Covenant trailed 82-52.

Covenant outscored Sewanee in the fourth quarter, aided in large part by its work at the free-throw line, where the Scots converted 11 of 14 attempts. However, the margin never narrowed enough to apply significant pressure, and Sewanee closed out the game to secure a comfortable victory.

Wright led the Scots in scoring with 19 points, adding five rebounds and three steals. Fellow freshman Sanders also delivered a strong performance, pouring in a career-high 16 points. Chloe Bertrand made her impact across the stat sheet, finishing with eight points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Sewanee had a big advantage shooting the ball as they shot 53% from the floor to Covenant's 33%. They also made eight three-pointers shooting 32% while Covenant made just three shooting 17%.  Sewanee won the rebounding battle, 41-34, and recorded 23 assists on 33 made field goals. Both teams struggled with ball security, as Covenant committed 26 turnovers and Sewanee finished with 29.

The Scots drop to 21-20 all time against the Tigers.

UP NEXT: Covenant will play on the road at Welch on Saturday.
