Covenant Sees Title Hopes End in Penalty Shootout

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -  Covenant and Maryville faced off on Saturday in the CCS Championship, playing each other for the last time as conference opponents. For the second time in seven days, Covenant found itself in a penalty shootout after a wild game. However, this time, the home side was not as fortunate in the shootout, falling 6-5 to come just short of winning another trophy.

Final: Covenant 1, Maryville 1 (Maryville wins in PKs 6-5)
Records: Covenant (8-5-5, 5-1 CCS), Maryville (9-3-6, 4-1-1 CCS)

HOW IT HAPPENED (REGULATION AND OT):

  • Maryville scored what turned out to be its lone goal early on, as in the ninth minute Ben Brophy tapped in a well-placed cross from Brady Hammer from the right side.
  • In the 23rd minute, Covenant equalized as Jonathan Welsh blasted a shot from deep, to the top left of the net.
  • Covenant had the last six shots of the half, but the score remained tied 1-1.
  • At the intermission, Covenant had outshot Maryville 12-3.
  • Shortly after the second half began, Maryville had back-to-back scoring opportunities within a few seconds of each other on a corner kick as Eli Honeycutt saved a shot at his back post before another Maryville shot was cleared off the line by Fox Landgren.
  • Whitt Tisdale and Landgren each put shots on net for the Scots just after the 70-minute mark.
  • With less than six minutes remaining, Maryville had a chance right in front of goal after a spilled cross fell to the away side, but the ensuing shot missed high.
  • Nate Selig for Maryville gave away a silly penalty with 15 seconds left, fouling Tisdale as he was dribbling away from goal.
  • The ensuing penalty kick from Welsh that would've all but won the match was saved by Tanner Ricks, sending the match to overtime.
  • Covenant started off the first overtime period on top with a flurry of shots, including a point-blank header from Tisdale that rang off the crossbar.
  • Welsh tried to win it with another shot from deep in the 97th minute, but his shot missed high.
  • In the second overtime period, Brophy had a shot right in front of the goal that was well-saved by Honeycutt to keep the match tied.

PENALTY KICKS:

  • Each of the first five players for both teams made their penalty kicks. Daniel Wallis, Tisdale, Jackson Hinson, Jackson Bostrom, and Henry Parker netted the goals for Covenant.
  • With the score tied at five, Landgren's shot for Covenant was saved by Ricks who dove to his left.
  • Jonathan Case then stepped up and delivered the winning goal for Maryville, using a bit of hesitation to send Honeycutt the wrong way.
