Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late Game Fireworks Lift Scots Over Eagles

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Scots knew what they were doing when they scheduled Emory to visit Scotland Yard for Homecoming. After the two high-quality teams battled it out for 86 minutes, a late Kade Theunissen goal gave Covenant the win and sent the mass crowd of fans home happy.

Final: Covenant 1, Emory 0
Records: Covenant (6-2-1), Emory (3-4-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Covenant had limited offensive opportunities in the first 45 minutes as Ian Adams had its only shot on goal of the half in the 13th minute.
  • The Eagles threatened early on with six shots in the first 25 minutes of the game, three of which were on goal.
  • Scots keeper Eli Honeycutt kept defending his net as a save in the 40th minute ensured the two teams would go into halftime scoreless.
  • In the 54th minute, a counter-attack found Zachary Moir in on goal, but a late block from an Emory defender put the ball out for a corner instead of in the back of the net.
  • The Eagles had the next three shots over 15 minutes, but could not convert their chances.
  • Emory nearly took the lead in the 81st minute as Ryan Hayes had his shot hit the right woodwork.
  • In the 87th minute, Kade Theunissen scored the winner on a break after Whitt Tisdale played him through on goal sending Scotland Yard bananas.
  • The Eagles had one free kick with 12 seconds remaining, but the ensuing cross went out for a goal kick and ended the game.

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant moves to 4-8-8 all-time against Emory.
  • The Eagles outshot the Scots 18-10 and had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Honeycutt set a new career-high in saves with seven.
  • Emory had the higher foul count 11-8.
