Covenant Leaves Lonestar State on Losing Note

SAN ANTONIO, Texas. - Covenant ended its Texas trip with two more games against strong opponents in No. 11 Trinity and Endicott. The Scots gave it their all, but ultimately were swept in both matches. 

Final: Covenant 0, No. 11 Trinity 3
Records: Covenant (4-3), No. 11 Trinity (4-4)

FIRST SET:

  • A pair of kills by Kelsey Carman and two kills from Kinsley Kleinmann got Covenant started offensively with the score at 4-4.
  • With the Scots trailing by two, a 4-0 run for the Tigers gave them some cushion at 14-8.
  • Another 4-0 run by Trinity pushed its lead to 20-10.
  • A kill followed by a Covenant attack error ended the set at 25-13.

SECOND SET:

  • Sarah Jennings began the set with three service aces to put Covenant in front. 
  • The Tigers clawed their way back to take the lead at 7-6.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth before a 4-0 run for the Scots that included three errors by the Tigers put the score at 13-11, Covenant.
  • Covenant stayed in front as a kill by Cali Sandhoff made it 20-18. 
  • A service ace from Trinity capped off a 7-1 run to end the set at 25-21.

THIRD SET: 

  • Covenant found itself in a hole early as Trinity raced in front 9-3.
  • A 3-0 run capped off by a service ace from Amber Snook cut the lead to three points. 
  • After trailing as much as seven points, Covenant trailed just 20-17 after a Hannah Mathis kill. 
  • Three consecutive kills by the Tigers ended the set at 25-19 and the match. 

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant moves to 0-1 all-time against Trinity.
  • Sandhoff led the Scots with 10 digs, seven kills, and seven assists. 
  • Jennings had her best performance of the weekend with 18 digs.
 

Final: Covenant 0, Eastern 3
Records: Covenant (4-5), Endicott (6-3)

FIRST SET:

  • Covenant gained some cushion after a kill from Kyla Bailey and an attack error by Endicott made it 8-6.
  • Midway through the set a 5-0 run from the Gulls put them ahead 12-11.
  • The two teams were neck-and-neck as an attack error by Endicott tied the set at 16.
  • Next came another 5-0 run for the Gulls that proved to be too much for Covenant to overcome as it dropped the set 25-20.

SECOND SET:

  • Both teams had their own scoring runs, but the score remained tied at 10 in the early goings of the set.
  • Kills by Kennedy Barber and Mathis helped push Covenant in front 16-13. 
  • The Scots kept their lead until a 5-1 run pushed the Gulls ahead 21-19.
  • Covenant regained the lead at 23-22, however a service error by the Scots, plus a Endicott kill and service ace ended the set at 25-23. 

THIRD SET: 

  • Endicott jumped out to a 10-5 lead giving Covenant an early deficit to try and come back from. 
  • With the help of three kills by Mathis, the Scots came all the way back on a 7-0 run to put the score at 18-16.
  • Covenant scored just four more points as the Gulls battled back to take the set 25-22 and the match. 

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant moves to 0-1 all-time against Endicott.
  • Mathis led the Scots offensively with 10 kills. 
  • Sandhoff posted 13 digs and six kills. 
  • Snook nearly had a double-double with a team-high nine digs and eight assists. 

UP NEXT: The Scots travel to Berry for three games next weekend, starting with a 2023 NCAA Tournament rematch with Emory on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
