DEMOREST, Ga. - The Scots again struggled to hold late leads as the Lions rallied twice to upend the Scots and sweep the series.
Game 1 Final: Piedmont 9, Covenant 7
Records: Covenant (12-19, 5-6 CCS), Piedmont (18-11, 6-2 CCS)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Scots took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Chris Savage drove in Kenny Mills on a double play.Â
- Freshman starter Zach Barrett got out of a jam in the second inning, striking out back to back men to end the inning after the Lions put runners at second and third with one out.
- Piedmont tied the score in the third inning on an RBI single by Trace Cate.
- Piedmont added two runs in the fifth inning on two run-scoring singles by Cate and Isaak Mullanack to make it 3-1 Piedmont.
- The Scots answered in the top of the sixth, putting together a 5-run inning, highlighted by an RBI single by Ben Johnson and a 2-RBI double by Kolby Kimberly.
- Piedmont responded with a 2-run bottom of the sixth, anchored by a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.
- The Scots added to their slim lead in the top of the eighth, with Savage lining out to left to drive in Kenny Mills.
- The Lions dashed the Scots hopes with a 4-run bottom of the eighth, taking the lead on the 2-RBI single by Tyler Nelson.
- Johnson singled with two outs in the top of the ninth, but Kimberly lined out to end the game.
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant moves to 15-21 all-time against Piedmont.
- Senior Zeke Gilbert had three hits in five plate appearances.
- Mills went 2-4 at the plate with a walk.
- Kimberly and Johnson each added two hits apiece.
- Barrett had a solid outing with five innings, allowing three runs (two earned), walking one and striking out five.
Game 2 Final: Piedmont 7, Covenant 3
Records: Covenant (12-20, 5-7 CCS), Piedmont (19-11, 7-2 CCS)
- No runs were scored until the top of the fifth inning, when Sam Cecil hit his fifth homer of the season to give the Scots a 1-0 lead.
- Piedmont returned in the bottom of the fifth and scored three runs via two doubles and an RBI groundout to put them in the lead 3-1.
- The Scots notched it at three in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Daniel Bell and an RBI fielder's choice by Mills.
- Piedmont took charge in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four runs on a 2-RBI single by Schulyar Willis, Kolton Hicks' RBI single and Hicks later scoring on an error to make it 7-3 in favor of Piedmont.
- The Scots loaded the bases in the top of the ninth with one out, but could not get any across the plate as Mills popped out to the catcher and Gilbert grounded into a force out to end the game and series.
GAME NOTES:
- Cecil went 2-4 with a homer and an RBI.
- Cody Gibson also went 2-4 and had a run scored.
- Mills and Bell added an RBI each.
- Scotty Smith had his third consecutive quality start, tossing six innings and giving up three earned runs, walking two and striking out six.Â
