COLUMBUS, Miss. - Wanting to get its first win of the year, Covenant played two more games today in the MUW Invitational. However, Franklin and Sewanee proved to be too much for Covenant as it dropped both games.Â
Game 1 Final: Covenant 2, Franklin 10
Records: Covenant (0-3), Franklin (1-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- Franklin benefited off a couple of Covenant errors to score three unearned runs in the first inning.Â
- A RBI single through the left side in the second inning extended Franklin's lead to 4-0.Â
- The Grizzlies scored their fifth and sixth runs in the third inning on back-to-back RBI base hits.Â
- Mary Elaine Mitchell put Covenant on the board in the third inning with a RBI double to left field.Â
- Ashlyn Gaines scored Mitchell with a RBI single through the left side to make it 6-2.
- Franklin answered in the fourth inning with another run off a RBI double to right field.Â
- Covenant loaded the bases in the fourth inning, but was unable to score anybody.Â
- The Grizzlies made it 8-2 in the fifth inning, scoring a run off an infield error.Â
- A RBI double and an unearned run later in the inning scored Franklin's ninth and 10th runs.Â
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant drops to 0-1 all-time against Franklin.Â
- Mitchell and Gaines both went 2-for-3 to lead the Scots offense.
- The Grizzlies outhit the Scots 17-6.
- Covenant committed four errors.Â
- Lauren Edgar was the losing pitcher of record (2.1 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 K).
Game 2 Final: Covenant 4, Sewanee 11
Records: Covenant (0-4), Sewanee (3-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- Mitchell took advantage of two wild pitches in the first inning to give the Scots a 1-0 lead.Â
- Sewanee went ahead for good in the second inning with a 2-RBI double to right-center field and a RBI single to left field.Â
- The Tigers extended their lead to 4-1, scoring a run off an infield error.Â
- In the fifth inning, Sewanee added two more runs on a RBI sacrifice fly to right field and a RBI groundout to first base.Â
- Covenant rallied in the fifth inning with a RBI single from Oliva Stefl followed by two more runs scored by Lexi Tincknell who reached on an outfield error.Â
- In the seventh inning, the Tigers put the game out of reach with five more runs, highlighted by a 3-RBI double with the bases loaded and two outs.Â
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant drops to 19-4 all-time against Sewanee.Â
- Stefl, Taylor Murdock, and Olivia Duran all went 2-for-4 to lead the Covenant bats.
- The Tigers outhit the Scots 12-8.Â
- Sewanee made four errors while Covenant made two.
- In her first career start, Madison Bowden took the loss (5 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 1 K).
UP NEXT: Covenant hits the road again on Saturday, Feb. 17 for two games against Birmingham-Southern College.Â
