Scots and Vikings Split Saturday Doubleheader

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - On a cold day on campus, Covenant hosted North Park for a doubleheader. The Scots run-ruled the Vikings in the first game, but dropped game two. 

Game 1 Final: Covenant 12, North Park 1
Records: Covenant (2-2), North Park (0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The scoring started for the Scots in the first inning as Kenny Mills knocked in a couple of runs with a 2-RBI double to left-center field.
  • Alex Divito led off the fourth inning with a home run to score North Park's only run of the game.
  • Josh McCaskill hit a little-league homer with a triple followed by a throwing error that allowed him to score in the fifth inning. 
  • On back-to-back at-bats, Zeke Gilbert delivered a RBI double to center field and Chris Savage hit a RBI single through the left side to put the Scots ahead 5-1.
  • Later in the fifth inning with the bases loaded, Benjamin Johnson scored Savage with a RBI single up the middle. 
  • Gilbert broke the game open for good with a 3-run home run to left field in the sixth inning to put Covenant in front 10-1. 
  • Three batters later, Chase McBryar crushed a 2-run home run to left field.

GAME NOTES:

  • 12 runs is a season-high for Covenant.
  • The Scots had eight hits while the Vikings had six. 
  • Gilbert was 2-for-3 with a HR, 4 RBIs, and 1 BB.
  • RHP Bryce Bollinger pitched a complete game to get his first win of the year (7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 7 K).

Game 2 Final: Covenant 1, North Park 9

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Vikings scored two runs in the first inning off of wild pitches. 
  • Later in the first inning, a RBI triple down the left-field line and a double-steal extended North Park's lead to 4-0. 
  • North Park added two more runs in the second taking advantage of a Covenant error that started the scoring. 
  • A RBI sacrifice fly and a RBI double to left-center field pushed North Park's lead to 8-0 in the fourth inning.
  • Chase McBryar scored Covenant's only run with a RBI double, but Kenny Mills was thrown out at the plate as Covenant tried to score another run on the hit. 
  • The Vikings posted the final run of the game on a 6-3 double play with the bases loaded and no outs in the eighth inning. 
  • Covenant put two runners on in the ninth inning, but couldn't plate any of them. 

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant moves to 1-1 all-time against North Park.
  • McBryar and Cody Brewer led the Scots with two hits.
  • Hits were in favor of North Park, 12-6.
  • Covenant committed two errors while North Park committed one. 
  • RHP Scotty Smith took the loss (0.2 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K).
  • RHP Zach Tolleson threw in relief of Smith (4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3K).
  • RHP Jonathan Glover and RHP Ethan Geobert each threw scoreless innings out of the bullpen. 

UP NEXT: Covenant starts a three-game set with Messiah at home on Friday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m.
