Scots Championship Pursuit Falls Short in CCS Tournament Final

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - In a rematch of last year's CCS Championship game that Covenant won 2-0, the Scots hosted Belhaven. In this year's championship it was a different story though as the Blazers used a strong defense to shutout the Scots and take the trophy back to Jackson.

Final: Covenant 0, Belhaven 2
Records: Covenant (12-3-3, 4-0-2 CCS), Belhaven (12-3-4, 4-1-1 CCS)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Scots earned a pair of corner kicks in the 12th and 14th minute, but were unable to muster any shots on the set pieces.
  • Covenant keeper Eli Honeycutt made a pair of saves to keep the match level over the next 12 minutes, including an impressive one at the bottom left of his goal on a free kick.
  • Fox Landgren had a look on goal in the 20th minute, but his shot missed the goal by just a few inches.
  • In the 34th minute, a Covenant clearance off a corner kick from Belhaven led to a Samuel Hadley goal from deep on the volley.
  • At the intermission, Belhaven had outshot Covenant 8-6.
  • The Blazers had an open look on goal in the 57th minute, but Honeycutt was true to Courtland Williams' shot after he was played in.
  • Matt Smith scored Belhaven's second goal in the 68th minute with a beauty of a free kick from way out that found the top left of the net.
  • Covenant's best chance late in the game came in the 84th minute as Ian Adams hit the side netting with an attempt.

GAME NOTES:

  • Covenant moves to 4-6-5 all-time against Belhaven.
  • Belhaven outshot Covenant 17-10 and had a 6-0 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Blazers had a higher foul count at 20-13.
  • Covenant had seven corner kicks while Belhaven had three.
