SEWANEE, Tenn. - As it has the last several years, Covenant started off the season at the Lon Varnell Classic. Matched up against Oglethorpe, the Scots played a tight game with the SAA member, ultimately falling 99-94.

FIRST HALF:
- Covenant's first three shots they made were triples by Adam Deininger, Fisher Mitchell, and Luuk Dusek as it led 9-7.
- Four points by Pierce Smith ignited an 8-0 run as Covenant stayed in front 24-16 with 11:16 remaining.
- The Stormy Petrels rallied all the way back as a tip-in layup tied the game at 31.
- Covenant immediately responded with an 8-0 highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers by Logan Patterson on consecutive possessions.
- Once again Oglethorpe came running back as a fast-break layup put it ahead 44-43 with 3:44 left in the half.
- The Scots scored the final six points of the half capped off by a layup from Derrius Teagle to go into the locker room up 55-49.
SECOND HALF:
- Oglethorpe scored the first nine points of the half to set the tone and lead 58-55.
- The two teams went back-and-forth for the next few minutes as Jake Stephen drilled a triple to make it 68-65 Scots.
- Dusek nailed a pair of 3-pointers as Covenant led 76-72 midway through the half.
- It was Oglethorpe's turn again to go on a scoring run as it went up 82-80 after scoring eight points in a row.
- The Scots kept chucking up the 3-ball and it paid off as Korbin Long and Deininger each hit a shot from downtown to make it 91-86 Covenant.
- Covenant went cold, missing its next six shots and losing the lead before a layup by Patterson tied the game at 94 with 51 seconds left.
- The deciding moments happened at the free-throw line as Covenant committed a few fouls in the final 51 seconds that led to Oglehtorpe knocking down five free throws to squeak out the win.
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant moves to 4-7 all-time against Oglethorpe.
- Logan Patterson scored 20 points in his first game at Covenant to lead the offense.
- Duusek, also playing in his first game with the Scots, was next with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
- The final Covenant player in double-figures was Deininger with 10 points in his first game at Covenant.
- Covenant shot 40% (34-85) from the field and 31.8% (14-44) from three while Oglethorpe was 46.4% (32-69) and 34.6% (9-26) in the same statistical categories.
- The Scots were outrebounded 57-40.
