Scots Shutout By Cougars

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Covenant traveled to Maryville to take on Averett for the first of two games this weekend against nonconference opposition. After scoring four goals earlier in the week, the script was flipped as the Scots were shutout by the Cougars in a close defeat.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Coming off a game where he bagged a goal, Tyler Johnson put a shot on target in the 10th minute, but an Averett defender blocked it. 
  • Averett scored the only goal of the match in the 21st minute on a right-footed strike from Daniel Starr from outside the penalty box. 
  • The Scots earned four corner kicks in the next 12 minutes, but could not do anything with them to tie the game. 
  • Seconds before halftime, Kade Theunissen had a great opportunity to score, but his shot missed just left.
  • In the 60th minute, the Cougars had a couple of shots, however J.T. Gard was true to the first one and his defense cleared the next one. 
  • Covenant kept battling as Tyler Swinehart put a shot on the top left of the net that was saved by Averett's goalie in the 81st minute. 
  • Knox Gibson had an open header after a corner kick in the 87th minute, but his shot was saved to keep the match scoreless. 

GAME NOTES: 

  • Covenant drops to 4-3-3 all-time against Averett.
  • The Cougars had 15 shots with five on target while the Scots had 10 with three on target. 
  • Covenant had nine corner kicks and Averett had four. 
  • Averett had the higher foul count 12-10.

UP NEXT: Covenant will take on Mount St. Josephs tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Maryville.
