MARCH 11– Covenant Baseball took on the Calvin Knights this weekend, falling in games one and two after Calvin shows strong offensive front.
However, Covenant was still hopeful for game three. It would be senior right-handed pitcher
Nick Pettit that would start on the mound for the Scots.
Â
Despite allowing three runs in the first, Pettit was able to retire the Knights' next three batters in inning two after second baseman
Andrew Brock snagged a low and hard-driven line drive in order to secure the 4-3 double play.
Â
The Scots were able to get a run on the board in the first inning, and continued to add in the second. After two walks and a hit-by-pitch, Senior
Joseph Ridenour came up to the plate, bases loaded– one out. Drawing the walk, Covenant was able to add one more to their score, bringing the Scots just one run behind the Knights.
Â
Covenant would allow just one run in the third, a combined effort between
Nick Pettit and relief pitcher
Judah O'Neal on the mound to hold the damage to a score of 4-2.
Â
Despite allowing Calvin to get ahead 5-2 in the fourth, Covenant came back bottom of the fifth swinging. Hot hands from
Zeke Gilbert and
George Manera started the Scots off with some quick momentum. A double and a triple to follow brought home two, shaving the lead to 5-4.
Â
The offensive pressure forced Calvin to make a pitching change. However, Covenant continued to push through, designated hitter
Cody Gibson having no trouble adjusting to the new pitcher, driving one to right field and allowing for the tying run to score. Another Ridenour hit-by-pitch walked in another run to take the lead from the Knights, 6-5.
Â
Though the Scots were in a bases-loaded jam, a combined effort from Judah O'Neil and relief pitcher
Sean Hogg weaved their way on out and did not allow for any runs to score.
Â
A solo homerun from first baseman
Chris Savage gave the Scots some more wiggle room with their lead, but the momentum fell flat as the batters following Savage gave the Knights three quick outs.
Â
Sean Hogg would come back out to the mound for the final inning. The Knights were not far behind and managed to get another run, but Hogg would complete the game with forcing back-to-back ground outs and securing the win in the final game.
Â
Chris Savage and
Zach Ferlita each had two hits, and four Scots tallied RBIs (Savage, Manera, Gibson, McBryar).Â
