Scots Drop to 3-2 after Facing No. 5 Berry

FEBRUARY 14– Coming off an outstanding performance in the MUW Invitational tournament, Covenant Softball headed to Berry with a perfect 3-0 record to take on the No. 5 ranked team in the nation. The Scots were slated to complete a double-header in the Tuesday matchup, with the first game beginning at 3:00 PM.

The Scots opened the game with a bang, jumping to a first-inning lead following a home run from sophomore third-baseman Lauren Kay. Unfortunately, Kay's home run would be one of only two hits for Covenant in the game and the only run scored for the Scots.

Jenna Yeary was set to start at pitcher for the Scots again, picking up the loss with six innings pitched, seven runs, with one strikeout. The loss against the Vikings moves Yeary's record for the season to 2-1.

Ending by a score of 7-1, Covenant picked up their first loss of the season, with another game scheduled to begin shortly after the conclusion of the first game. With a scheduled first pitch at 5:00 PM, the Scots took on the Vikings once more with junior Taylor Murdock making her first pitching start of the season.

Murdock would pick up the loss for the game, finishing her outing with five innings pitched and five runs on nine hits. Freshman Mackenzie Kirby would come into the game to relieve for the Scots, pitching the final inning for Covenant and giving up two runs on three hits.

The offense for the Scots made a quick adjustment between games and were able to tally seven hits off of the Vikings. Senior outfielder Mary Elaine Mitchell led the offense for the Scots, racking up three hits and a stolen base in her four at-bats. Sophomore catcher Olivia Stefl also picked up a pair of hits in the game as well as an RBI.

Resulting in another loss for the Covenant by a score of 7-3, the Scots moved to a record of 3-2 through the first two weeks of the 2023 season. With Saturday's scheduled matchup against Johnson being postponed, the Scots will return to play next Wednesday at home against Birmingham-Southern, in a 2:00 PM matchup.
