EBRUARY 10– Over the past week, the Covenant men's basketball team competed in another two conference contests, the opponents of which were the Maryville Scots and the Piedmont Lions. Despite valiant efforts, the Scots lost both of the games and moved their conference record to 4-6, with an overall record so far this season of 8-15.Â
Â
In the first of the two matchups, Covenant traveled to Maryville for a 7:00 PM game on Tuesday night. The contest proved to be an all-out battle between the opposing squads, ending by a score of 103-99, in favor of Maryville, following three overtime periods.Â
Â
Despite an all-around solid game from Covenant, the end of regulation came down to an inbound play for Maryville with 0.6 seconds remaining. Somehow, Maryville was able to get two shots off after the inbound pass and send the game into overtime, where they would eventually secure the victory.Â
Â
The scoring for Covenant would be led by senior forward
Promise Igbanu, finishing with 23 points, and sophomore guard
Charlie Hester, finishing with 22 points. Hester secured a career-high in both points and minutes on the night, totaling 40 minutes on the floor.Â
Â
Covenant would unfortunately not find the results they were looking for in their following game against the Piedmont Lions either. Ending in another loss for the Scots, Covenant dropped their second matchup against the Lions in as many weeks. With a final score of 91-74, Covenant moved to 4-6 in conference play so far this year.Â
Â
The offensive efforts for the Scots were again led by
Promise Igbanu, who finished the game with 32 points and 10 rebounds to secure the double-double. Junior forward
Jonathan Gernatt and freshman guard Malcom Noel each tallied up 12 points a-piece for the night as well. Despite shooting well from the field and the free throw line, the Scots inability to connect from beyond the three-point line with consistency made any comeback effort difficult to start.Â
Â
UP NEXT
Following the pair of losses, the Scots will return home for their next contest, hosting the LaGrange Panthers in a 7 PM matchup. The game will most likely be Covenant's final home contest for this season, and senior forward
Promise Igbanu will be recognized as part of Senior Night prior to tip-off. Â
