Covenant Beaten in OT in CCS Championship at Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Covenant traveled to Maryville for the CCS Championship game looking to knock off the No. 1 seed on its home turf. The game needed more than 90 minutes, but Covenant fell just short in Overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • It was a dream start for Covenant with Emma Riggs scoring her third goal of the year in the fourth minute after getting in front of a clearance attempt to win the ball. 
  • After the opening goal, the game went back-and-forth with both teams having two shots on goal in the next 10 minutes. 
  • Maryville got the equalizer in the 39th minute with a goal from Sadie Phelan that was assisted by Katie O'Brien and Katie Corley.
  • At the intermission, Maryville had outshot Covenant 5-3. 
  • Maryville had two shots in the first two minutes of the second half, but each one was off target.
  • Having just come off the bench, Tyneisha Herring put a shot on goal that was saved in the 62nd minute. 
  • Leah Marr had a look on goal seven minutes later that was well saved at the top left of the goal. 
  • Maryville tallied five shots in the final 20 minutes of regulation, but all of them were off target. 
  • Just over six minutes into Overtime, Sierra Lee scored for Maryville after being set up by a through ball from Madison McDonald. 
  • Marr had Covenant's only shot in the 20 minute Overtime period. 

GAME NOTES: 

  • Covenant drops to 5-16-2 all-time against Maryville.
  • Maryville had 22 shots while Covenant had 7, but shots on goals were only 7-6 in favor of Maryville.
  • Maryville had a big advantage in corner kicks at 10-1. 
  • Lucy Sandhoff and the Maryville goalie each made five saves.
  • After the game, Riley Amell and Addie Gamache were named to the All-Tournament team.
