LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The No. 25 Scots finished out the regular season with two victories on Senior Day over Lynchburg and Oglethorpe. Covenant moves into the conference tournament on a six-game winning streak.Â
Game 1 Final: No. 25Â Covenant 3, Lynchburg 1
Records: No. 25Â Covenant (30-2, 16-0 CCS), Lynchburg (10-12, 6-6 ODAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- The Scots scored five of the first six points of the first set, with seniors Kyla Bailey and Reagan Keener getting a kill apiece in that span.
- Lynchburg battled back to tie the set at six all with the help of a couple of Covenant errors.
- The two teams traded blows for the next several points until Covenant pulled away with seven consecutive points to make it 23-12. Lynchburg committed four errors to help the Scots pull away.
- Another Lynchburg error won the Scots the first set by a 25-15 score.Â
- The two teams began set two by battling back and forth to reach an 8-8 stalemate.
- Lynchburg then took 17 of the final 22 points to defeat the Scots 25-13 in set two, with the Scots committing three errors and losing the final point to a Ava Meindhardt service ace.
- Set three was again competitive early on, with the teams reaching a 7-7 stalemate at one point.
- Covenant then went on a six point run to make it 13-7, only to watch Lynchburg come back and make it a 16-15 Scots lead late in the set. Â
- The Scots took nine of the last eleven points in the set to take it 25-17, with Kelsey Carman picking up two kills and a service ace. Hannah Haerer finished the set with a kill to give the Scots a 2-1 set advantage.Â
- The Scots took control of the fourth set from the outset, scoring the first seven points. Seniors Rachel Bartlett and Kyla Bailey each had a kill during that stretch.
- Covenant outscored the Hornets 18-12 over the final stretch to win set four 25-12 and take the match. The scoring was distributed fairly evenly the rest of the way, with Carman (2), Bailey (3), and freshman Cali Sandhoff (2) picking up multiple kills. Back to back Lynchburg atack errors won the Scots the fourth set and the match by a score of 3-1. Â
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant moves to 1-2 all time against Lynchburg.
- Haerer led the Scots in kills with 10 and in blocked shots with six.Â
- Sarah Jennings led the Scots in digs with 12.
Game 2 Final: No. 25 Covenant 3, Oglethorpe 1
Records: No. 25 Covenant (31-2, 16-0 CCS), Oglethorpe (10-11, 3-9 SAA)
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â
- The Scots and Petrels battled for the entire first set, with neither team budging until the very end, when Covenant reeling off four of five points to take set one 25-22. Â
- Senior Emma Kalbfleisch had six kills in the first set to boost the Scots to a 1-0 lead.
- Set two was another close one, with the Scots overcoming an early 5-2 deficit and a 14-11 score in the middle of the set thanks to two kills and one assist from Kalbfleisch.
- The Scots began to attempt to take control of set two following overcoming that deficit, opening up a narrow 19-17 lead at one point, but the Petrels responded by reeling off four consecutive points to take a 21-19 lead.
- The Scots then struck, with five straight points of their own to put them firmly ahead 24-21. Kalbfleisch sealed it two points later with an emphatic kill to put the Scots up 2-0 in sets.
- Set three took a different tone, with the Scots jumping out to a 10-4 lead. Rachel Bartlett added two kills to put the Scots in command.
- After a quick 3-0 run by the Petrels, Covenant scored five straight to give them a 15-7 lead. Bartlett added another kill during that stretch.
- The Scots never looked back after that, leading 21-10 at one point and finishing the job 25-13 off of back to back Petrel errors. Â
GAME NOTES:
- Covenant moves 19-11 all-time against Oglethorpe.Â
- Kalbfleisch led the Scots with 12 kills.
- Bartlett had five blocks and 24 assists to lead the Scots in those categories.
- Jennings and Carman had 12 digs apiece to pace the Scots.Â
UP NEXT: The Scots will stay home and host for the CCS conference tournament opening round on Tuesday night. They will face either Agnes Scott or Wesleyan.Â
