Men's Basketball Falls to Wittenberg at Lon Varnell Classic

SEWANEE, Tenn. - Covenant opened its season against Wittenberg at the Lon Varnell Classic hosted by Sewanee. The Scots were ultimately outmatched by the Tigers, falling 75-50.

FIRST HALF:

  • Wittenberg scored the first eight points before a 3-pointer from Davie Compere put the Scots on the board with 15:53 on the clock. 
  • A 7-0 run for the Tigers gave them a double-digit lead at 17-6. 
  • Fisher Mitchell drilled a triple for Covenant midway through the half to get his team within nine points.
  • Buckets from Jonathan Gernatt and Eli Witt kept the deficit in single digits with 4:38 remaining in the half. 
  • Wittenberg scored the final six points of the half, including a 3-pointer by Trey Killens right before halftime to take a 40-25 lead. 

SECOND HALF:

  • The Tigers continued their momentum right after halftime with a pair of triples to take a 47-25 lead. 
  • Covenant didn't quit as a 3-pointer and a made jumper sparked a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 47-34 with 13:53 remaining. 
  • Another made shot for Wittenberg at the midway point of the half pushed the lead back into the 20s at 58-37. 
  • An 8-0 run for Wittenberg pushed a 17-point lead to 25 points with 3:54 remaining and ended any chances at a comeback for Covenant. 
  • Walker Mathis got on the scoresheet with a couple of inside buckets in the final minutes. 

GAME NOTES: 

  • Covenant drops to 0-1 all-time against Wittenberg
  • Compere was the only Covenant player in double figures with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. 
  • Covenant was 38.8% (19-49) shooting while Wittenberg was 51.9% (28-54) from the field. 
  • Wittenberg committed only four turnovers and forced 13 Covenant turnovers. 
  • Each team struggled at the free-throw line with Covenant shooting 40% (6-15) and Wittenberg shooting 54.5% (12-22).
UP NEXT: Covenant takes on Sewanee at 5 p.m. tomorrow for its final game of the Lon Varnell Classic.
