JANUARY 25– Covenant Women's Basketball traveled to Berea, Kentucky last night to take on the top-seeded Mountaineers for the second time this season.
Â
Berea is currently 10-0 in conference and 18-1 overall, a dominant force in the CCS. However, Covenant came out strong and scored the first basket, trying for an early lead on the Mountaineers. Berea quickly answered, taking the lead from the Scots.
Â
The first quarter remained close until a last-minute Berea three-pointer extended the lead to eight points heading into the second period.
Â
The Scots continued to fight, but the first half would end with the Mountaineers ahead by 19.
Â
Coming out from halftime, Covenant battled to cut the lead. After several Scots scored, it was a layup in the paint from
Sydney Jones that brought the Scots back in. Covenant was trailing by 11 with under five minutes to go in the third quarter.
Â
Berea was able to stop the Scots' momentum before Covenant could cut the lead any further. The Mountaineers held a lead of 23 points by the time the fourth quarter began.Â
Â
During the final 10 minutes of play, Covenant was able to increase both their field goal percentage and three-point percentage significantly. Though this did not result in a decrease of the Mountaineer's lead, it did allow for the Scots to match Berea's scoring in the fourth quarter.
Â
Covenant scored 21 points in the final period, more than the first two quarters combined.Â
Â
In the 68-47 loss,
Karis McIntosh led the Scots with 19 points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Abby Witt contributed eight points, five steals, and two blocks on the night.
