Game Recap: Volleyball |

Emma Kalbfleisch Named CCS Player of the Week after BSC Match

Senior middle blocker Emma Kalbfleisch was awarded Player of the Week for the week of August 29th by the Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS), where she led her team in kills against MUW (13 kills) and against most recent opponent, BSC, with 20 kills.

The Scots faced Birmingham Southern this past Saturday, September 3rd, in a tri-match hosted by BSC. Covenant Volleyball's first match-up of the day were the nationally-ranked Emory Eagles. The Scots fell in three sets.

However, Covenant's second match-up of the day was BSC, who had just come off a win over Emory, three sets to one. Despite a tough loss to Emory just hours before, the Scots bounced back and took BSC to five (28-26, 16-25, 28-26, 20-25, 12-15).

Emma Kalbfleisch was unstoppable on the front line for Covenant, leading in kills (20), blocks (6), and aces (2). The senior was fired up after the loss earlier, and decided to put consistent pressure on the Panthers' defense.

Not only did the senior tally 20 kills, Kalbfleisch was nearly perfect on the front line, only allowing two attacking errors. The middle blocker from Fort Worth, Texas posted a .486 hitting percentage over the course of five sets, an incredible feat.

In a disappointing fifth set, the Scots were not able to overcome the Panthers, only trailing by three points when the match came to a close.

Rachel Bartlett went 2-2 on the day with double-doubles, recording her second straight double-double of the season with 39 assists and 13 digs. Starting outside Kelsey Carman was just shy of a double-double with nine kills and 14 digs, a match-high. Grace Logterman and Bartlett added four blocks apiece for the Scots.

Covenant Volleyball's next matches will be played this Friday and Saturday (Sept. 9-10) at the Berry National Invitational, where the Scots will continue their streak of competing against nationally ranked opponents according to the ACVA Preseason Poll. (no. 6 Berry, no. 23 Ohio Northern) These rankings are subject to change.
