Under new head coach Kara LeLeux, the Covenant softball team achieved a 20-win season and the program's highest conference finish in 2022.

The Scots ended the year 20-17 overall, marking the fifth 20-win season in program history, while finishing a program-best third in the USA South West Division with a 10-6 record.

Under LeLeux, the Scots got off to a 3-1 start to the year and picked up big wins throughout the season. The Scots knocked off No. 13-ranked Berry in March 29 to give the program its first-ever win over a ranked foe. Covenant also had wins over George Fox and Emory, two teams that were ranked at one point during the season.

The Scots reached the 20-win plateau with an 11-0 victory over Agnes Scott on Senior Day to clinch the No. 3 West seed in the USA South Tournament.

Freshman Lauren Kay was a big part of the Scots' success. She earned first team All-NFCA Region VI honors and was a first team All-USA South selection after leading the team with a .430 average and nine home runs. Kay was the NFCA National Player of the Week on April 19 after batting .783 (18-for-23) the week prior. She set numerous program freshman records and the overall single-season records for runs (45, tied) and on-base percentage (.537).

Joining Kay with All-USA South honors were Vanessa Davis, Taylor Murdock, and Lauren Kierpa. Davis was a USA South Player of the Week honoree and hit five homers on the year, while Murdock batted .388 and tossed a shutout at Emory. Kierpa was again the ace of the pitching staff and ends her career in the top-five in program history in several career pitching categories.

SEASON NOTES

  • It was the first 20-win season for the Scots since a program-record 23 wins in 2018. The 10 conference wins are the second-most in a season (12, 2017).
  • Lauren Kay had an outstanding final month of the season. Kay had a hit in 13 straight at-bats in early April and raised her batting average by 170 points in the span of a week, while going 18-for-23 at the plate during a six-game stretch in mid-April. She became the first player in program history to hit two home runs in back-to-back games when she did that in a sweep at Berea. Kay tied a program record with nine straight multi-hit games. Her first team All-Region honor marked the second straight year a Scot has been on that team.
  • Lauren Kierpa ends her career with 28 wins (second-most in program history). She also ranks second in innings (352.2), shutouts (6), and third in strikeouts (225).
  • Vanessa Davis also hit two home runs in a game as she did so in a win over Brevard. Davis' nine career home runs through her first two years are tied for fifth (with Kay) all-time.
  • Taylor Murdock and Madison McDonald had two of the most impressive starts in the circle all year. Murdock blanked Emory on March 11 and allowed just one hit in a 10-0 victory. McDonald had a stellar start against No. 13 Berry on March 29 going seven innings and surrendering one run on two hits, while also collecting an RBI single herself, in a 2-1 win over the Vikings.
