LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- For the fourth time in the last six seasons, the Covenant men's tennis team is the best in the west as the Scots clinched the USA South West Division regular season title with a 9-0 victory over LaGrange on Friday
Covenant (11-5, 5-0 USA South) claims its second straight USA South West Division title. The Scots have won, or shared, the West Division title four times since 2017. Covenant will be the No. 1 West seed in the USA South Tournament, which begins on April 28 in Rome, Ga.
The victory also capped Senior Day for the Scots.
Ben Luke,
Cameron Cortman,
Chris Morton,
Ethan Gibson, and
Tyler Kelly were all honored prior to the match. The quintet has been a part of two straight regular season titles and 38 victories, while also achieving top-10 marks individually in singles or doubles wins.
Doubles play saw tough matches for the Scots in all three flights.
Austin Dreslinski and Luke combined for an 8-5 win at the top flight over Al Robertson and Luke Griffin. At No. 2,
Gill Dunn and Gibson were 8-6 winners over Josh Tullier and Daniel Assumpcao, while Morton and Kelly outlasted Mathias Vera and Joshua Hembree, 8-4, at No. 3.
The Scots then took care of business in the singles portion of the match.
Luke was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Robertson at No. 1, while Gibson took down Assumpcao 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2.
Solomon Crouch earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Griffin at the No. 3 flight and Cortman was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Tullier at No. 4.
Morton and Kelly rounded out the final two flights with victories. Morton defeated Vera 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 and Kelly triumphed over Hembree 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.
