MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Covenant baseball team succumbed to big innings from Huntingdon in both games of Monday's doubleheader and fell to the host Hawks in the final two games of the USA South series. Huntingdon took game one, 10-6, before completing the sweep with an 11-4 victory in game two.
The doubleheader was played on Monday due to inclement weather and wet field conditions over the weekend and both games were scheduled for seven innings.
Covenant (7-10, 0-3 USA South) returns home to face Sewanee on Tuesday. Huntingdon (11-7, 3-0 USA South) has won five straight.
GAME ONE: Huntingdon 10, Covenant 6
Huntingdon used a seven-run third inning to build a 10-2 lead and coasted to a 10-6 win in Monday's first game.
Covenant led 2-1 after 2.5 innings as
Tyler Cox and
McKaleb Harlemon produced RBI hits in the top of the frame. However, Huntingdon answered with seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the third to grab an 8-2 lead.Â
The Hawks added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make it 10-2. The Scots got within striking distance in the seventh with four runs, including another RBI double from Cox and a run-scoring triple from
Jackson Redmon, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Joseph Ridenour was 3-for-4 for the Scots, while Cox went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Covenant had 11 hits in the loss.
Aaron Northcutt (0-3) got the loss after going 2.2 innings.
Jackson Rau and
Houghston Schaefer had scoreless outings from the bullpen. It was Schaefer's collegiate debut as he came on to strike out his only batter faced in the sixth inning.
Eddie Patterson (5-1) went 6.1 innings in his start to collect the win for the Hawks. Colin Whibbs was 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead Huntingdon.
GAME TWO: Huntingdon 11, Covenant 4
Huntingdon broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning with eight runs to complete a three-game sweep with an 11-4 victory.
Like in the first game, the Scots had an early lead. Covenant scored twice in the third inning as
Harrison Adelgren put the Scots on the board with an RBI single before Cox produced an RBI ground out to make it 2-0.
Covenant held that lead until the fifth when Huntingdon pushed three runs across on Scots starter
Zach Tolleson. In the sixth, the Scots responded as
Ken Burke tied the game with an RBI single that plated Ridenour.
In the bottom of the sixth, the floodgates opened for Huntingdon once again. Cullen Stafford led off the inning with a pinch-hit, solo home run to give the Hawks the lead back at 4-3. Huntingdon added seven more runs as 12 men came to the plate in the frame.
Burke was 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Scots tallied seven hits. Tolleson went four-plus innings allowing three runs and striking out five.
Conor Austin (1-2) picks up the loss.
Five Huntingdon players recorded two hits, including starting pitcher Colton Clark who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Clark went 5.1 innings on the mound before Tucker Duke (2-0) came on to record the win.
