LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The visiting Pioneers used 14 hits to top the Covenant softball team 9-3 on Tuesday afternoon.
The loss brings the Scots to a 7-8 overall record, while Transylvania improves to 8-4.
The Pioneers struck early, as they would hit four singles in the top of the first inning to help them take a quick 2-0 lead. And after tacking on another two runs over the third and fourth innings, they extended the lead to four (4-0).
Two singles and a Transylvania error helped the Scots cut the deficit to three in the bottom of the fourth (4-1). The singles came off the bats of Lauren Kay and Jordan Holman.
The visitors scored twice more in the top of the fifth off of three hits, including an RBI-double from Stella Wulker (6-1). But, the Scots would answer with one more run of their own in their half of the inning, making it 6-2. The score came thanks to a single from Cope Whitaker and a fielding error by the Pioneers.
But, Transylvania quickly answered back with another three hits in the top of the sixth, which helped them extend their lead to seven (9-2).
Vanessa Davis would launch a home run in the bottom of the sixth to give Covenant another run. But, it would ultimately not be enough as the Pioneers gained the 9-3 victory.
Davis finished 1-for-4 with an RBI. Taylor Murdock, Helena Nagy, Whitaker, and Holman all were 1-of-3. Lauren Kierpa (2-6) started in the circle for the Scots and recorded six earned runs, one walk, and two strikeouts in five innings pitched. Wulker was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Alyssa Nunn was a perfect 3-of-3 with three RBIs. Marlee Woodward (3-1) started at pitcher for the Pioneers and pitched 5.2 innings with two earned runs, zero walks, and zero strikeouts.
