Women's Hoops Can't Rally Past Brevard

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's basketball team rallied from a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but visiting Brevard had the final run and pulled away for a 57-53 victory over the Scots on Thursday night inside Barnes PE Center.

Ruthie Moore had a career-high 24 points to go with a career-high-tying 15 rebounds in the loss. It was Moore's fourth double-double in the last five games. Cosette Kirsch added 21 points.

Covenant (7-10, 4-7 USA South) trailed by 13 in the third quarter and by 12 early in the fourth before rallying back behind Moore and Kirsch. A Kirsch 3-pointer with 2:46 left in the fourth gave the Scots a 48-47 lead and capped a 15-2 run over a span of five minutes.

The teams traded leads over the next minute of play. After a Brevard basket following Kirsch's triple, Naomi Crumley gave the lead back to the Scots with her layup, assisted by Moore. Brevard answered on its next possession with Makenna Parkins putting the Tornados ahead 51-50 with 1:52 left.

The Parkins basket started an 8-0 run for Brevard to seal the game. Avery Lockwood's layup with 1:03 left made it 53-50 and Destiny Williams went 4-for-4 at the free throw line to secure the game for the Tornados.

Karis McIntosh scored six points in the fourth quarter to aid in the comeback attempt for the Scots. Megan Rouse and Crumley had four rebounds each. Covenant shot 33.9 percent (21-of-62) for the game with five 3-pointers, while holding a 38-33 edge in rebounding.

Williams led Brevard (10-8, 5-5 USA South) with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Shakirah Thompson had 11 points, all in the first half as the Tornados built a 26-20 lead at the break. Brevard connected on 39.6 percent (21-of-53) but hit eight 3-pointers.
