Baseball Splits with Oglethorpe after Walk-Off Win

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Covenant baseball team hit four home runs on the day and used a walk-off, extra-inning win in game two of Saturday's doubleheader to produce a split against the visiting Stormy Petrels.

The split brings the Scots to a 3-3 record, while Oglethorpe now sits at 2-5.

GAME ONE: Covenant 5, Oglethorpe 7

Zeke Gilbert hit two homers in the first game of the day, but it would not be enough as Oglethorpe earned the 7-5 victory.

After the Stormy Petrels took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, Gilbert quickly tied it up with a two-RBI home run over the left field fence (2-2).

And after holding Oglethorpe scoreless in their half of the fourth, the Scots would put three more runs on the board, taking a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the inning. An RBI sacrifice fly from Joseph Ridenour and another two-RBI homer from Gilbert helped bring the runs to the plate.

It was Gilbert's third home run in the last two games.

But, the lead would be short lived, as Oglethorpe would use four singles in the sixth inning to score four and take a 6-5 lead. Two doubles in the top of the seventh would then help the Stormy Petrels tack on another run (7-5).

Covenant would have runners in scoring position in each of the remaining innings, but could not capitalize as Oglethorpe held on for the 7-5 win.

Gilbert finished game one going 2-for-5 with four RBIs. Kenny Mills, Ken Burke, and McKaleb Harlemon were also each 2-of-5. Freshman George Manera recorded his first collegiate hit, going 1-for-2.

Bryce Bollinger got the start on the mound for the Scots and pitched five innings with five strikeouts, three walks, and six earned runs. Mills (0-1) pitched four innings of relief with two strikeouts, one walk, and one earned run.

Carson Weir led Oglethorpe, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Matthew Gill went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Harry Paul started at pitcher, recording three strikeouts, zero walks, and two earned runs in four innings pitched. Andrew Noack (1-0) earned the win after pitching three innings of relief, and Noah Cole picked up his second save of the season.

GAME TWO (7 innings): Covenant 6, Oglethorpe 5

After Oglethorpe forced extra innings, Chris Savage tied the game with his first career home run, and Andrew Brock drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth to give the Scots a 6-5 victory in game two.

Covenant started off hot, as a three-RBI double from Harlemon would give them a 3-0 lead in the first inning.

Mills would then make it 4-0 with a solo home run in the bottom of the third. It was the second of the season so far for the junior.

The Stormy Petrels were not to go quietly, though, as they began to chip away at the lead.

A homer from Will Arnold in the fourth plus two more runs in the top of the sixth cut the Scots' lead to one heading into the seventh inning (4-3). And Matthew Gill would then launch a solo shot to left field in the top of the seventh, tying the game at four runs apiece.

After Covenant was unable to score in their half of the seventh, Oglethorpe tacked on another run in the eighth thanks to a wild pitch (5-4).

In the bottom of the eighth, Savage was brought to the plate as a pinch hitter, and in his first official collegiate at-bat, launched a no-doubter over the left field fence, making it 5-5. And after Covenant loaded the bases thanks to a walk and two singles, Brock drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the winning run (6-5).

Mills went 3-for-4 in game two, with an RBI and two runs scored. Harlemon was 1-for-2 with three RBIs, while Manera and Burke were both 2-for-4.

Zach Tolleson started on the mound for Covenant, recording two strikeouts, zero walks, and three earned runs in six innings pitched. Nick Pettit (1-1) earned the win after pitching two innings of relief with three strikeouts, one walk, and zero earned runs.

Arnold went 2-of-3 with an RBI. Weir started for the Stormy Petrels, striking out five and walking one in five innings pitched. Cole recorded the loss (0-1).
