Softball Ends Mississippi Trip with Sweep

COLUMBUS, Miss. -- Pitching and timely hitting were in order for the Covenant softball team on Saturday as the Scots concluded the trip to Mississippi with identical 6-3 wins over Sewanee and MUW.

Covenant moves to 3-1 on the year.

GAME ONE: Covenant 6, Sewanee 3

Lauren Kay and Cope Whitaker had two hits apiece and Covenant scored all six of its runs over a three-inning stretch to earn a 6-3 win over Sewanee.

It was Covenant's second win over Sewanee in as many days.

Taylor Murdock (1-0) notched her first career win as she went five innings in the circle and allowed one earned run on five hits. Maggie Harris collected her first career save after going the final two innings and striking out three without allowing a hit.

Whitaker put Covenant on the board in the fourth with her RBI double that plated Murdock. In the fifth, the Scots scored three times as Vanessa Davis tripled home a pair of runs before Jordan Holman singled home Davis one batter later to make it 4-0.

Sewanee (0-7) scored three runs in the fifth, but the Scots answered with two runs in the sixth. Kay had the big hit in the inning as her one-out double brought home two runs to give Covenant a 6-3 lead.

Covenant had nine hits in the game from seven different players.

Michaela Walker (0-5) got the loss for Sewanee as she went seven innings.

GAME TWO: Covenant 6, MUW 3

Covenant avenged Friday's loss to MUW with a 6-3 win in Saturday's finale.

Helena Nagy went 3-for-4 and Kay was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Davis, Holman, and Murdock also had two hits each as the Scots produced 13 hits in the victory.

Lauren Kierpa (1-1) picked up the complete-game win as she scattered five hits with two strikeouts across seven innings.

Covenant trailed 3-1 in the fifth, but Kay changed that with her first career home run, a two-run shot, to make it 3-3. The blast propelled the Scots to a five-run inning and grabbed the lead for good. Holman and Alexa Gonzalez had RBI singles later in the fifth sandwiched around a Rebecca Hazard RBI fielder's choice.

The Scots grabbed an early lead in the first as Nagy delivered an RBI double before MUW (2-1) scored twice in the first and once in the fourth to gain the lead.
