Game Recap: Volleyball |

Volleyball Advances Past Berea in Four to Play in CCS Finals

Covenant Volleyball is headed to the Collegiate Conference of the South's Championship Match tomorrow afternoon (Saturday, November 5th). The Scots will be taking on the Huntingdon Hawks, whose overall record is 28-8 and conference record is 13-3. The Scots were seeded first heading into the conference tournament, with a conference record of 14-2.

The Hawks upset the No. 2 seeded Maryville Scots in the earlier semifinal match this evening in three straight sets. Though the Hawks seemed to have gained tremendous momentum in their sweep of Maryville, the Covenant Scots won a tough battle tonight against Berea, propelling them into the championships that will be held tomorrow at 3:00 PM.

The match-up tomorrow between the Scots and the Hawks is sure to be an intense back-and-forth affair, as each team has one win and one loss against the other during regular season. The Hawks won earlier on in the season against Covenant, but the Scots came back later in the season to take a four-set match from the Hawks.

As both teams have developed since then, tomorrow's finals will be the game to watch.

In tonight's match against the Berea Mountaineers, the Scots came out with a slow start. The Mountaineers out-performed the Scots in nearly every aspect of the game. Covenant then dropped the first set 18-25. However, something must have sparked a fire within the Scots after that first set. Covenant came out swinging in set two, hitting at a much higher percentage.

In set one, Covenant hit .188, while in set two made the jump to .355, a significant increase. The Scots defense was unstoppable, holding Berea to a .000 hitting percentage in the second set, as well as out-digging the Mountaineers 18-9.

Libero Anna Baldwin recorded 21 digs and Kelsey Carman added 17. Player of the Year, Emma Kalbfleisch showed tonight just exactly why she was given that honor by the conference in the first place. Kalbfleisch tallied 19 kills on the match hitting as an outside for the Scots, an uncommon position to see Middle Hitter Kalbfleisch.

Hannah Haerer also played quite a great game, tallying 11 kills and three blocks on the night. Taylor Caldwell hit an impressive percentage against the Mountaineers, recording a .348 hitting percentage with 8 kills. Caldwell was second in blocks on the team with four total on the match. Grace Logterman led the Scots with five total blocks and chipped in seven kills of her own. Junior Setter Rachel Bartlett had 44 assists.

The Scots and the Mountaineers both played a great match, but in the end, only one can move forward. After the four-set thriller, the Scots came out on top (18-25, 25-17, 25-18, 27-25). Tomorrow, a champion will be determined after Covenant meets the Hawks for the third time this season.
