OAKLAND CITY – Following a championship-ending to the conference tournament for the Covenant men's soccer team, the Scots traveled to Oakland City, Indiana to begin a run in the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament. Taking on the home team of the Oakland City Mighty Oaks, Covenant emerged victorious in their first matchup of the tournament by a score of 3-1 in overtime.Â
Â
In the first half of the match, both teams had difficulty finding promising offensive chances. Due to strong defensive showings by both Covenant and Oakland City, the Scots only attempted two shots while the Mighty Oaks offered three attempts of their own.Â
Â
After the first 45 minutes of game time, the score remained 0-0. Covenant Goalkeeper
Eli Honeycutt was only forced to make one save in the opening half, ultimately tallying five total saves for the match.Â
Â
Entering the second half, the Mighty Oaks struck first with a goal in the 70th minute by Reijmar Westerbroek, assisted by James O'Brien. However, the Scots would not go down quietly as they battled to score an unassisted goal of their own in the 83rd minute from junior forward
Kade Theunissen.Â
Â
Regulation play ended at a tied score of 1-1, calling for overtime to decide the winner of this early tournament matchup. Covenant held the advantage entering overtime play following the six yellow cards and one red card awarded to Oakland City in regulation, and the Scots capitalized on the extended play almost immediately.Â
Â
Five minutes into the first half of overtime play, Defensive Player of the Year,
Jay Patterson, scored an unassisted goal to put Covenant ahead 2-1. Not long after, in the 100th minute, freshman forward
Whitt Tisdale scored an unassisted dagger of a goal to extend the lead to 3-1 to ensure the victory for the Scots.Â
Â
With the 3-1 win to open up this portion of the NCCAA tournament, Covenant advances to the championship round of the Mid-East Region. The Scots will take on the No. 1 Campbellsville Tigers tomorrow, November 19, in Oakland City for a 1:00 PM match.
