Tuesday, November 15– Covenant Women's Basketball falls to 1-2 after losing 55-74 to Oglethorpe, despite Junior Guard
Karis McIntosh's 24-point performance.Â
McIntosh was joined in double-digit points by
Cosette Kirsch, as she finished with 12 of her own and six rebounds on the night. Sophomore
Breezy Savage scored eight points throughout the game, going 4-4 from the free throw stripe while also collecting two assists and three steals.Â
Â
Following a 1-1 record from Mountaintop Madness to begin the year for the Scots, Covenant hosted the visiting Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels for a non-conference, regular season game. It marked the eleventh all-time matchup between the Scots and the Stormy Petrels in women's basketball, Covenant holding a 2-8 record in the previous meetings.Â
Â
The Scots started the game off in a close contest, with neither team amassing a lead larger than four points until 1:30 left in the first quarter. McIntosh led the Scots with eight points in the first half, while also tallying a defensive rebound to her credit.Â
Â
However, the Scots were able to convert on only 28.6% of their attempted field goals in the first half, creating a steep deficit that they would need to climb out of in the final twenty minutes of play. Oglethorpe was able to pull away over the course of the first two quarters, heading into halftime with a 34-19 lead.Â
Â
It became apparent as soon as the second half started that the Scots had found some serious motivation during halftime, as they cut the 15-point lead of the Stormy Petrels to six in the first five minutes of the third quarter. Knocking down four three-point shots during the run, three of which were made by
Karis McIntosh, Covenant was able to build some momentum.
Â
With the third quarter winding down, both teams had difficulty generating good scoring opportunities. However, Oglethorpe was able to capitalize on Covenant's six third-quarter turnovers and extend their lead once again to 39-52.Â
Â
Despite trailing by thirteen points, the Scots still showed no signs of backing down as they picked up two back-to-back
Breezy Savage steals in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. However, Oglethorpe proved to be too much on this particular night as they picked up steam in the final minutes of the game, making eight of their sixteen shots from the field as well as four at the free throw line.Â
Â
With a final score of 55-74 in favor of the Stormy Petrels, Covenant dropped their third game of the season to take their record to 1-2 on the year.Â
Â
The Scots will resume action on Friday, Nov. 18, as they travel to Richardson, TX in order to take on UT Dallas in a 6:30 PM game.Â
