Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Secures Two Wins

The Covenant men's soccer team has advanced their record to 7-3-4 on the season after their two most recent wins against Maryville and Piedmont. The Scots shut out both teams, the shut-out attributed to Freshman Eli Honeycutt, the Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week for Oct. 10.

These past few weeks, the Scots have competed in four conference matches: LaGrange, Belhaven, Maryville, and Piedmont. In these contests, the men's soccer team only allowed one loss against LaGrange.

In the match-up against the Panthers, LaGrange was the first to get a goal on the board. The Scots answered when Jay Patterson scored an unassisted goal, his fifth of the season. Enrique Hernandez, who scored the Panther's first goal, then scored once more on the Scots to bring LaGrange up 2-1 to end the first half. In the second half, Blake Meyers also scored an unassisted goal to tie the game back up, but in the 86th minute, the Panthers put one past Covenant goalkeeper, Will Hicks, to take the win on this conference contest.

The Scots were looking for a win the next Saturday against the Belhaven Blazers, but the end result was a scoreless match. Covenant well out-shot the Blazers, but could not find the back of the net. The Scots put up 17 shots, with six on goal, compared to Belhaven's eight shots, with two on goal. There was a goalkeeper switch for the Scots, turning to a freshman from Chattanooga, Tennessee, Eli Honeycutt. Honeycutt allowed zero goals not only on this match, but on the next two games against Maryville and Piedmont as well.

Covenant Men's Soccer has gotten back into a groove recently and topped Maryville 1-0 with Honeycutt on goal making 3 saves on the night. After a beautifully placed ball from Nathan Laughlin, Knox Gibson headed a well-placed shot right past the Maryville goalie, which ended up being just what the Scots needed in order to gain a conference win. Gibson's goal was his second of the season.

After a win last Wednesday against the Maryville Scots, Men's Soccer took down the Piedmont Lions for their second straight conference win in the past week. Covenant allowed no goals from their opponent once again, scoring twice on 20 shots taken.

Statistically, Covenant has shown to be a dominant defensive team in the conference. Even in the loss against LaGrange, the Scots have held most of their opponents to a much lower percentage of shots taken from the field. Maryville did put up two more shots than Covenant on Wednesday, but Covenant defense greatly reduced the amount of times Maryville could put those shots on target.

Against Piedmont, the Scots were able to get seven shots on target, compared to the Lions seven total attempts, with two on goal. Honeycutt made two great saves, holding the Lions offensively. Keegan Weekley scored his first goal of the season, giving Covenant their first goal of the night, the assist coming from Nathan Laughlin. The score remained 1-0 until Kade Theunissen put the Scots up 2-0 with another goal five minutes into the second half.

The Scots will face Birmingham Southern tomorrow night at 7:00 PM on Scotland Yard right after Women's Soccer hosts Agnes Scott for Senior Day at 4:30.
