LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN --
Ruthie Moore and
Megan Rouse combined for 34 points and the Covenant women's basketball team snapped its losing streak with a critical, 62-55, win over Huntingdon in USA South action on Saturday inside Barnes PE Center.
Moore led all players with her double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Rouse had a season-high 15 points with six rebounds and three blocks in the win. Covenant (7-8, 4-5 USA South) got its first win since Dec. 4 and maintains its position in the top-half of the USA South West Division.
It was Moore's second double-double in the last three games and the third consecutive game she has grabbed 11 or more rebounds.
Covenant led for much of the game, but had to hold off a Huntingdon rally in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
The Scots built a 12-point lead early in the fourth quarter on the heels of an 11-1 scoring run that began late in the third quarter.
Naomi Crumley drilled a 3-pointer to kick-start the spurt with 2:20 left in the third and
Breezy Savage added a triple in the final minute of the period to give the Scots a 45-34 lead. Moore converted a driving layup early in the fourth as the Scots took a 47-35 lead with 9:24 remaining.
Huntingdon (6-10, 2-5 USA South) rallied back. The visiting Hawks used a 7-0 run to trim the Scots' lead to 51-47 with 5:36 left after a Kennedy-Ryan Jackson layup.Â
Covenant held a 55-53 lead with 2:35 remaining but extended that lead to four on a
Karis McIntosh bucket with 2:21 left. Up by two with just over a minute left,
Madison Blevins drained a 3-pointer from the corner as the shot clock expired to give Covenant a 60-55 lead at the 1:02 mark.
Tight defense over the final minute from the Scots capped the win.
The Scots made just four 3-pointers in the game, but made them count as three of those came in key situations in the second half. Covenant connected on 42.9 percent (24-of-56) for the game and 10-of-16 at the foul line.
Cosette Kirsch added 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists for Covenant. McIntosh had seven points, five rebounds, and three assists.Â
Huntingdon got 12 points and six rebounds from Brooklyn Oden, while Jackson had 11 points before fouling out.
