Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Run Vaults Brevard over Women's Hoops

BREVARD, N.C. -- A late, 9-0, run by Brevard broke a tie game and lifted the host Tornados to a 61-53 win over the Covenant women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon inside Boshamer Gym.

Ruthie Moore poured in a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds, but it was not enough for Covenant (6-7, 3-4 USA South) as the Scots lost for a sixth straight time.

A tightly contested game came down to the final five minutes in the fourth quarter. Moore made two free throws to tie the game at 46-46 with 5:36 remaining, but Brevard scored the next nine points to seal the win.

A Destiny Williams layup capped the run and gave the Tornados a 55-46 lead with 3:26 left in the game. The Scots got within four (56-52) after a Mary Elaine Mitchell layup with 29 seconds left, but free throws down the stretch secured the win for the Tornados.

Moore went 8-of-11 at the free throw line to aid in her 20-point effort. Mitchell added 10 points and a season-high nine rebounds, while Karis McIntosh had nine points and Cosette Kirsch eight. Kirsch tallied a game-high four assists.

Covenant trailed the majority of the contest after taking a 2-0 lead before the tip-off on a Brevard administrative technical foul. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Scots trailed 16-12 at the end of the first period.

The Scots connected on 33.3 percent (16-of-48) from the field with six 3-pointers and 15-of-19 at the line. The Scots also won the rebounding battle, 44-40.

Williams had 22 points, six rebounds, and five steals to lead Brevard (9-5, 4-2 USA South). Makenna Parkins had 14 points off the bench as the Tornados made 33.3 percent (23-of-69) from the floor and were held to only four made 3-pointers.
