LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Two second-half goals lifted visiting Sewanee past the Covenant men's soccer team, 2-1, on Tuesday night at Scotland Yard.
It was the first match of the year for Covenant (0-3-1) at Scotland Yard. For Sewanee (1-2), it was the Tigers' first win over Covenant since 1989.
Covenant took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when
Parker Owen converted a penalty kick. A corner kick from
Thomas Drake was mishandled by the Sewanee defense and led to a handball inside the box. Owen calmly knocked in the penalty for his first goal of the year.
The Scots took 11 shots in the opening half, but carried just a 1-0 lead into the break.
The score remained until the 63rd minute. Sewanee's Severin Velasco took a deflected cross inside the box and knocked his shot past Covenant keeper
Henry Hooks to even the match at 1-1.
The visiting Tigers took the lead for good in the 76th minute. Trevor Reichman's attempt hit the post and bounced right to Evan Poole, who finished from close range to make it 2-1.
Mercer Stout and
Jake Major had looks at the net in the final 10 minutes, but Sewanee keeper JP Furman made saves on both to thwart a Covenant rally.
Covenant had a 20-12 shot advantage as Stout led all players with eight attempts. Hooks made six saves at the net for Covenant, while Furman also made six saves.
