DANVILLE, Ky. --
Jake Major recorded his first career hat trick and the Covenant men's soccer team dominated Spalding en route to a 3-0 win in the finale of the Bob Allen Nissan Classic, hosted by Centre, on Saturday evening.
Covenant (2-3-1) has won two straight. The Scots locked down defensively in both wins over the weekend, posting two shutouts and out-shooting opponents 45-14.
Major was at the forefront of the offense in the victory as the fifth-year senior notched his first career three-goal match. It was the first hat trick for a Scot since 2017 when Ethan Pettit scored three times in a win over Berea.
It was Major and
Mercer Stout connection that worked on each of the Scots' first two goals. In the ninth minute, Stout took a shot that deflected off the post and right to Major, who scored from short range to give the Scots a 1-0 lead.
That score remained until the final 10 minutes of the match. In the 84th minute, Major received a pass from Stout in the middle of the box and knocked his shot into the back of the net for his second goal of the night. In the 89th minute, it was Major showing off the moves to get free to score from just inside the box for a 3-0 lead.
It was the first three scores of the season for Major. Stout picked up his first two assists of the campaign.
Covenant outshot Spalding, 23-3, with Major taking six of those attempts. Covenant keeper
Henry Hooks made one save to notch his third shutout of the year.
Spalding (1-3-1) keeper Trevor Massa made seven saves in the loss.
