BREVARD, N.C. -- The Covenant baseball team got one game out of the two in Tuesday's double-header at Brevard. The Scots earned a 3-2 victory in game one, while the Tornados took game two 10-4.
GAME 1 (7 innings): Covenant 3, Brevard 2
An RBI triple from Harrison Adelgren in the top of the seventh brought in the winning run to give the Scots the 3-2 victory in game one.
Covenant struck early as Tyler Moore would single and Brooks DuBose would double in the first, giving the Scots a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning for both teams, two hits in the third helped Covenant tack on another run. Lewis Saunders recorded a double, and Alex Gonzalez singled to help the visiting Scots take a 2-0 lead over Brevard.
The Tornados were able to cut the lead in half, though, in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to a hit and three Covenant errors. A single from Logan Clark helped start off the inning, allowing Brevard to come within one (2-1).
Covenant was then held scoreless in the top of the fifth, allowing the Tornados to even the score in their half of the inning.
Brevard used a walk, a wild pitch, and a single from JJ Wilkes to even the score up 2-2. The score would remain that way until the seventh inning.
To start the final inning, Tyler Cox was walked and then replaced by pinch runner Zeke Gilbert. Gilbert was then able to advance to second on a wild pitch, bringing the go-ahead run into scoring position.
And after Kenny Mills grounded out, Adelgren tripled down the right field line, giving the Scots a 3-2 lead and ultimately bringing in the winning run.
Pitcher Nick Pettit was then able to make quick work of the Tornados, ending the game in a three-up, three-down fashion.
Adelgren went 1-for-3 with the game-winning RBI. DuBose was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Pettit (4-3) pitched all seven innings, with one earned run and five strikeouts.
Clark went 1-for-3, while Wilkes was 1-for-4. Matthew Scavotto (2-4) got the start on the mound for Brevard and pitched 6.1 innings with three earned runs and eight strikeouts.
GAME 2: Covenant 4, Brevard 10
The Tornados used three hits in the first inning to bring across four runs to take an early lead over the Scots.
Singles from Wilkes and Clark, along with a double from Zach Allison helped Brevard take a quick 4-0 lead after the first.
Covenant would soon cut the lead to one, though, after producing a three-run second inning. The Scots used two Brevard errors and a single from Gonzalez to make the score 4-3.
But the Tornados answered in the bottom of the inning, tacking on two more runs to extend their lead to three. Singles from Jason Jucker and Allison helped make the score 6-3 in favor of Brevard.
The Scots then came within two in the top of the third, thanks to a single from Josh Harvey and a sacrifice fly by Gilbert (6-4).
But Brevard would once again answer, as they would bring across three runs off of three hits in the bottom of the third inning.
Two of the runs were produced by doubles from Peter Fumero and Noah Harris, while the third came thanks to a balk. The runs allowed the Tornados to gain a 9-4 lead.
While both teams would put runners in scoring position in the coming innings, the score remained 9-4 until the bottom of the eighth, when Brevard was able to tack on another run. An RBI single from Clark extended the lead out to six heading into the ninth inning (10-4).
Though Harvey was able to reach third base thanks to a walk and two wild pitches in the top of the ninth, the deficit proved to be too much as the host Tornados were able to seal the 10-4 victory.
Gonzalez was 2-for-3 in game two with an RBI, while Harvey and Gilbert finished 1-for-4. Cody Gibson got the start on the mound (0-1) and was quickly replaced by Noah Sweatman after 0.1 innings.
Sweatman pitched 2.1 innings of relief, with four earned runs and three strikeouts. Bryce Bollinger followed, pitching 3.1 innings and striking out three with no earned runs. Senior Ross Skipper closed the last two innings out, allowing one earned run and posting one strikeout.
Jucker was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Allison and Fumero both went 2-for-4. Clark was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Ben Melton (2-0) started at pitcher for Brevard and pitched five innings with one earned run and two strikeouts.
The Scots now sit at 18-12 overall (4-6 in USAS), while the Tornados are 10-13 overall (4-5 USAS).
