Balanced Attack Leads Volleyball to a Pair of Wins at LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Ga. -- Contributions from all over the roster helped the Covenant volleyball team to a pair of wins at LaGrange on Friday inside Mariotti Gym.

The Scots took the USA South-counting match in three sets (25-14, 25-21, 25-16) in the opener before winning the non-conference match, 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-12, 25-13).

Covenant (9-4, 5-2 USA South) has won four straight and is now 23-3 all-time against LaGrange (5-5, 4-2 USA South).

MATCH ONE: Covenant 3, LaGrange 0

Seven different Scots recorded at least two kills and Covenant held LaGrange to a negative hitting percentage in a three-set victory (25-14, 25-21, 25-16).

Grace Logterman led the way for Covenant with six kills and four solo blocks, while Rachel Bartlett had a double-double of 21 assists and 10 digs with three solo blocks in the victory. Summer Johnson and Sara Delk had five kills apiece and Alexa Spurling added four of her own. Delk also had a match-high six aces.

Covenant never trailed in the opening set en route to a 25-14 victory. The Scots jumped out to a 10-4 lead as Delk produced a pair of kills early on. The lead extended to 12 on two occasions later on in the set as Covenant cruised to the set win.

In the second set, Covenant again took an early lead as the Scots led 9-4. LaGrange rallied and grabbed a 21-18 lead late in the frame, but Covenant answered with seven straight points to end the set and take a 2-0 match lead.

Delk was a key figure in the second-set rally as she tallied two kills and three service aces during the final run.

Covenant put the match away in the third as the Scots pulled away from the host Panthers. Anna Baldwin's ace gave Covenant an 18-11 lead and a solo block from Logterman clinched the match for the Scots.

Baldwin had 10 digs for the Scots and Johnson added nine.

LaGrange was led by McKenzie Richards' nine kills and Kirsten Boyd's 21 assists.

MATCH TWO: Covenant 3, LaGrange 1

Covenant wrapped up a doubleheader sweep of LaGrange by winning the final two sets in convincing fashion to take a four-set win (25-22, 23-25, 25-12, 25-13).

After LaGrange tied the match with a second-set victory, the Scots had their most efficient attacking sets over the final two frames to earn the win. Covenant had 12 kills and a .348 hitting mark in the third set before completing the win with 10 kills and a .320 percentage in the fourth.

Taylor Caldwell had a career-high eight kills in the win as Riley Howe and Emma Kalbfleisch also had eight kills each. Bartlett totaled 30 assists, 13 digs, six kills, and two blocks. Logterman tied a career-high with six blocks to go along with six kills.

Covenant held off a late LaGrange rally in the opening set to take a 25-22 win as Logterman sealed it with a kill.

LaGrange took its only set of the day in the second as the Panthers scored nine of the final 11 points to erase a deficit and tie the match.

The Scots kicked it into gear in the third and fourth sets to win the match. Covenant got out to a 12-4 lead in the third set after a Logterman solo block and led the rest of the way before a Caldwell kill ended the frame.

In the fourth, Covenant used an 11-2 run midway through to gain a 17-7 lead on a Kalbfleisch ace and cruised to the set win.

Delk tallied 11 digs and Baldwin recorded 10 to lead the back-line for the Scots.

For a second straight match, LaGrange was held to a negative hitting percentage (-.013). Richards led the way with 12 kills and Boyd had 38 assists and 16 digs in the loss.
