LAGRANGE, Ga. -- The Covenant baseball team used a four-run seventh inning to come from behind to defeat LaGrange 5-2.
The Scots produced nine hits in their sixth win in a row to get their first USA South victory of the 2021 season.
The Panthers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after two hits and a Covenant error helped bring in the first run of the game.
But, a double from Tyler Moore and an RBI single from Joseph Ridenour would soon even it up at one in the top of the second.
Soon after, LaGrange would answer in the bottom of the third with the go-ahead run after a single from Rhett Hebert and a sacrifice fly from Joe Ruth would make the score 2-1.
Covenant would fail to record a hit the next three innings, and the score would remain 2-1 until the top of the seventh.
But, the Scots would produce a four-run rally in the seventh, off of four hits, giving them a three-run lead.
After Ridenour was walked, Ken Burke hit a single through the left side, putting Covenant runners on first and second.
Lewis Saunders would then hit a three-run home run to give the Scots a 4-2 lead. It was the third homer of the season for Saunders.
Soon after, Alex Gonzalez singled up the middle, and Moore would bring him in with an RBI single of his own, giving Covenant the 5-2 lead.
The Panthers would produce two more hits in their last three times at bat, but the Scots' pitching and defense would not allow another run, sealing the 5-2 victory.
Saunders went 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Moore was 2-for-4 and Ridenour was a perfect 2-for-2.
Adam Carver (3-3) got the start on the mound for the Scots and produced his best start of the season. Carver pitched eight innings, with one earned run and six strikeouts. Kenny Mills pitched one inning of relief and earns his third save of the year.
Ruth went 1-for-2 with two RBIs for LaGrange, while Hebert went 2-for-3. Baley Coleman started at pitcher for the Panthers and records the loss (2-3). Coleman allowed five earned runs and struck out 12.
The Scots improve to 15-6, while LaGrange drops to 8-7.
