LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant volleyball team honored its three-player senior class with a three-set victory over Agnes Scott (25-14, 25-12, 25-3) on Tuesday night inside Barnes PE Center.
The program recognized seniors Alexa Spurling, Leah Buys, and Sara Delk before the match. With parents unable to attend because of COVID-19 policies, audio tributes from each players' family played over the public address system to honor the class.
In the match, the seniors were phenomenal. Delk had a match-high seven kills with a .462 hitting percentage to go with three digs and a pair of assisted blocks. Spurling added six kills and hit at a .667 clip and tallied a match-high four aces, while Buys totaled five digs and two aces.
Covenant (3-0, 2-0 USA South) hit .500 as a team in the opening set and used a 12-2 run to pull away from the visiting Scotties. Delk had five kills and a combined block in the first set as the Scots built a 19-9 lead. Delk's final kill of the stanza gave Covenant a 24-14 lead and an Agnes Scott error on the ensuing rally gave the Scots a 1-0 match lead.
In the second set, a mid-set surge propelled Covenant to a 2-0 match lead. The Scots struggled on the attack in the frame but scored eight of 10 points over a stretch to open an 18-10 lead after a Riley Howe ace. Buys had both of her aces on the night in the set, including the set point.
Covenant dominated the third to cruise to the win. Delk served for 13 consecutive points to close out the match and the Scots tallied eight kills.
Rachel Bartlett, the reigning USA South Rookie of the Week, had 18 assists and three blocks. Summer Johnson collected four kills (on five attempts) with four assists and three digs.
Covenant had 28 kills on the night and produced a .266 attack percentage. The Scots had six blocks as a team and limited Agnes Scott (0-2, 0-2 USA South) to a -.234 hitting percentage.
