LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit in Saturday's first match to win in five sets over visiting Huntingdon, before dropping a five-set match in the day's finale.
The first match counted for USA South standings as Covenant (5-3, 3-1 USA South) moves to 3-1 in league play.
MATCH ONE: Covenant 3, Huntingdon 2
Alexa Spurling had 12 kills, while Summer Johnson and Emma Kalbfleisch had 10 apiece in the five-set win (25-14, 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-7).
Down 2-1 in the match, Covenant had 15 kills and hit .250 in a clutch fourth set win, 25-22. The Scots trailed 20-17, but went on an 8-2 run to close out the set and force a decisive fifth stanza. Kyla Bailey recorded three of her five kills in the match during the key run.
In the fifth set, the teams traded the first 10 points before Covenant scored five straight to take a 10-5 lead on another kill from Bailey. A kill from Johnson flowed by an ace from Spurling sealed the win.
Rachel Bartlett added 42 assists, 18 digs, six kills, and two blocks for the Scots. Covenant had seven blocks as a team. Sara Delk also had six kills and Riley Howe added four.
Huntingdon was led by Amy Tyma's 19 kills.
MATCH TWO: Huntingdon 3, Covenant 2
Covenant took the first two sets, but Huntingdon won the final three in a comeback win (17-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-13).
Howe had 15 kills for Covenant, while Bartlett had 42 assists and 14 digs. Bailey had eight kills with Jess Chesrown and Johnson adding seven each.
Covenant had 12 kills as a team in each of the first two sets to build a 2-0 match lead. After Huntingdon won the next two sets, the teams battled in the fifth set. The deciding set saw seven ties and four lead changes, but the visiting Hawks scored the final three points to take the win.
Tyma had 16 kills in the match and Morgan Ilsley had 38 assists.
