LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Jordan Holman went 3-for-3 with two triples in game one and Lauren Kierpa tossed a complete-game in the circle to lead the Covenant softball team to a 4-3 game on victory over Huntingdon on Friday. Huntingdon responded with a 6-1 win in the second game.
It was the USA South opener for Covenant (8-12, 1-1 USA South).
Holman went 5-for-6 on the day to extend her hitting streak to 11 games, the longest active streak on the team.
GAME ONE: Covenant 4, Huntingdon 3
In a back-and-forth game, Covenant scored two runs in the sixth to erase a 3-2 deficit and take a 4-3 win in Friday's opener.
Down a run in the sixth, Aileen Hill led off with a triple and Faith Manning followed with an RBI double to left-center field to tie the game at 3-3. With the bases loaded and one out, Holman hit a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Makenna Dance for the go-ahead run.
Kierpa shut the door on Huntingdon (5-11, 2-2 USA South) as she worked around a leadoff single to throw a scoreless seventh and seal the win for the Scots. Kierpa (7-7) allowed two earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in her seven innings of work in the circle. It was her ninth complete-game of the season.
Covenant struck first in the first inning as Holman led off with a triple and then scored on a double-steal with Taylor Murdock. Huntingdon took a 2-1 lead after four innings, but the Scots answered in the fifth as Holman (who tripled to start the frame) scored on a Vanessa Davis RBI ground out.
The visiting Hawks regained the lead, 3-2, in the sixth before Covenant's comeback in the home half of the inning.
The three triples hit by the Scots set a single-game program record, while Holman's two triples tied an individual game record.
Hill and Manning each went 2-for-3 for Covenant as the Scots had eight hits.
Emma Bauer went 3-for-4 for Huntingdon and Hannah Vines was 2-for-3. Holly Sharp (1-1) got the loss in relief, while Lauren Melton threw five innings and allowed just one run on four hits.
GAME TWO: Huntingdon 6, Covenant 1
In Friday's finale, a two-run inside-the-park-homer from Huntingdon's Emma Bauer in the third inning broke a 1-1 tie and the Hawks pulled away late for a 6-1 win to come away with a split.
Huntingdon scored a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead before Covenant tied the game on an Emma Giller sacrifice fly in the second inning that plated pinch-runner Bailey Johnson.
In the third, Bauer ripped a line drive to right field that just got over the glove of Giller and rolled to the fence. Bauer used her speed to circle the bases for a two-run homer, her first of the year, giving the Hawks a 3-1 lead.
Huntingdon added three runs in the seventh for the final tally.
Holman had two more hits for Covenant as she was 2-for-3. Davis also went 2-for-3. The Scots left seven runners on base.
Jennifer Coates (1-4) was effective in the circle for Covenant as she went 6.1 innings. Elise Maddox (2-4) got the win for Huntingdon after throwing a complete-game and allowing one unearned run.
Huntingdon's top three hitters -- Brooke Stefankiewicz, Bauer, Emily Nieuwstraten -- went a combined 6-for-11 with five RBIs and four runs scored.
