LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Will Crumly had a career-high 37 points, but the Covenant men's basketball team could not get over the hump late in the game and fell to LaGrange, 70-66, on Saturday afternoon in USA South action.
It was Crumly's fifth career 30-plus point game and the most points scored by a Scot since the start of the 2003-04 season. The senior went 14-of-18 from the floor and 7-of-7 at the free-throw line to go along with seven rebounds.
Despite Crumly's performance, LaGrange (6-2, 6-2 USA South) built a 13-point lead with seven minutes left in the game and held off a Covenant (7-6, 3-3 USA South) rally late to secure the season sweep of the Scots.
Covenant trailed by 11 (67-56) with 4:27 left but rattled off 10 straight points to trim the deficit to one with 30 seconds left after a Crumly layup. Crumly had six points during the stretch and Brady Palmer hit a key 3-pointer to help get the Scots back in the contest.
LaGrange made two free throws on its ensuing possession and Crumly had a chance to tie the game with 10 seconds remaining, but his 3-pointer was off the mark and the visiting Panthers claimed the rebound and held on for the win.
Promise Igbanu had eight points and two steals for Covenant, while Daevon Platt had six points and five rebounds. Chris Barnette added five points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Palmer had a game-high four assists to go with five rebounds and five points.
Bershard Edwards had a career-high 17 points and was a perfect 5-of-5 on 3-pointers to lead the Panthers, who have won five straight. Kyle Brown scored 14 second-half points and had 16 for the day. LaGrange shot 44.8 percent (26-of-58) with seven 3-pointers in the win.
Covenant was held to 38.5 percent shooting (25-of-65) with four 3-pointers and 12-of-16 at the free-throw line.
Crumly scored each of Covenant's first 10 points of the game and helped erase an early 12-4 lead by LaGrange. The teams went back-and-forth in the opening half with seven ties and five lead changes as they entered the break deadlocked at 33.
A Crumly jumper opened the second half and gave the Scots a two-point lead, but an 8-0 LaGrange run gave the Panthers the lead for good.
