Men's Hoops Earns USA South West Tourney Bid with Win at Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Covenant men's basketball team clinched a berth into the USA South West Division Tournament next week with a 63-46 win at Huntingdon on Saturday afternoon inside Roland Arena.

Covenant (10-8, 6-5 USA South) swept Huntingdon as the Scots won 69-53 on Friday night behind 17 points from Chris Barnette and 15 points and 12 rebounds from Promise Igbanu.

The Scots again were dominant on the defensive end on Saturday limiting Huntingdon (4-10, 4-7 USA South) to 28.3 percent (15-of-53) from the field and outrebounding the host Hawks 44-30.

Brady Palmer had 18 points, going 8-of-13 from the floor, while Will Crumly added 13 points and nine rebounds. Barnette added 10 points with seven assists and six rebounds. Igbanu grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and Jonathan Gernatt scored eight points off the bench.

Covenant used an 11-0 run in the first half to gain a double-digit lead. A Palmer 3-pointer capped the run and gave the Scots a 20-9 lead with 8:04 left in the period. The lead stretched to 13 late in the half and the Scots took a 32-19 advantage into the break.

Huntingdon would trim the margin to fewer than 10 just once in the second half as Covenant maintained control of the game. Back-to-back layups from Barnette gave Covenant its largest lead of the game at 17 (59-42) with 3:23 remaining.

Covenant ended the game connecting on 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the field with six 3-pointers.

Damien Madison led all players with 19 points off the bench for the Hawks. Ceaunte Zachery had 13 points and James Harris 10 in the loss.

Covenant will be the No. 4 seed in the upcoming West Division tournament and will face No. 1 seed Maryville on Wednesday (time TBA).
