CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Covenant women's soccer team battled back from a 1-0 deficit in the second half, but Huntingdon's Kirstin Hayes scored the game-winning goal in the 106th minute to lift the visiting Hawks over the Scots, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at the UTC Sports Complex.
Covenant drops to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in USA South play, while Huntingdon is 3-1 and 3-1.
After a scoreless first half, Huntingdon struck first early in the second period. Hayes put the Hawks up 1-0 in the 50th minute on her first goal of the year, assisted by Erin Cembrale.
Ten minutes later, Covenant answered back. Leah Marr gained possession of the ball headed towards the Covenant attacking-third of the field and laced a shot past Hawks keeper Kylie Kersh for her second goal of the season.
Neither team had much of an advantage throughout the match and both squads produced limited offensive opportunities over the final 30 minutes of regulation.
In the first overtime, Kailey Burrell and Megan Rasku each had looks, but could not convert as the Huntingdon defense stood tall. Burrell also had an attempt early in the second overtime, but Kersh made the save.
In the 106th minute, Huntingdon's Alexis Louk played the ball to Hayes who corralled the ball and one-touched it past Covenant keeper Lucy Sandhoff and into the right-side of the net for the game-winning goal.
Huntingdon held a slim, 13-12, edge in total shots. Sandhoff made four saves at the net for Covenant, while Kersh made three saves.
Burrell had five shots for the Scots with Marr and Rasku each taking three.
